Drive partition size - Wondows XP Home

I’m hoping my friends on the Avast site can help me!

Our oldest computer (1.5mhz P4) is running Windows XP Home SP 3. It has a 60 gig HD partitioned into C = 20 gig and d = 40 gig. Both are set to NTFS (?)…not FAT32.

The operating system is on the C drive, and I only have 24% space left on C. My programs are on the D drive and I have plenty of space there…50%+.

If memory serves, the system starts swapping files more when your capacity falls under 30%, and the system slows down. This might not be true anymore…I don’t know.

I have the virtual memory (min and max) set to 3X the installed memory. Both drives are “clean” and defragged,

My question is: is there a way I can increase the available HD space for the C partition by taking some of the space from the D partition?

I really don’t want to reinstall the operating system as the reinstall sets the partition type to FAT32 which a former colleague told me is no good, and he helped me do it in NTFS. I also don’t remember if I had the option of setting the partition size.

Hopefully all this makes sense and there is hope! I am one of the 25+% unemployed in the USA and can’t afford a new PC.

Thank you!

Thanks…I will give them a try! If you recommended it…I’m sure it will work!!!

I knew somebody here would help me!!! Thanks again!!

Hi, I’m in there with you  , though I didn’t think the % was that high.

gparted is another feebie http://gparted.sourceforge.net/

14-15% is a favored figure for the amount of unemployed people who have given up on the job search and are no longer collecting unemployment benefits. 10% + 15% = 25%.

Our country is in a bad way…and I think it’ll get worse before it gets better.

I used your second suggestion and it was easy to use and it did exactly what I wanted it to do. However, giving my C drive more free space has not helped speed up the boot process and the machine in general…as I hoped/expected it would.

Oh well…I guess there’s no substitute for processor speed and RAM.
