DROPPED NORTON INTERNET SUITE FOR AVAST AND COMODO 3 BETA

Opened a bottle of Champagne. After a week or so with Norton on Vista, I got back to my old loving story with AVAST and dropped also AVIRA and its eternal updates problems (remembers me of…AVG!!!). So I think I did the right choice as always. I keep Antivir on my auxilliary computer on XP pro SP2 just to give me a second opinion but I already had more than enough with their numerous false positives (even Spwyware terminator was their target a month ago!!!). Installation of AVAST on VISTA HOME PREMIUM was a charm, I removed firts Norton from REvo Uninstaller, booted, then removed Live Update program, rebooted then runnned Norton removal tool and reboooted. Comodo 3 beta (latest version) was installed just before like a charm, except the main screen was behind the secondary screen, I wrote my email address, clicked next and then finish and everything proceeded fine. I’ll let you know of any problem. I’m on learning mode. ;D

Good for you, gdiloren!!

What would be interesting to know is how your system responds now you no longer have Norton running on it ?

Hopefully you have got rid of all the bits of Norton, it can be a real pig to get rid of at times.

My recent ‘drops’ on Vista:

  1. Removed Norton Internet Security (firewall + antivirus).
  2. Dropped with BitDefender 10 for on-demand scanning.
  3. Dropped with PCTools SpywareDoctor (low detection rate, missed a Bagle).
  4. Dropped with PCTools Firewall (bad bad uninstallation procedures: tons of leftovers!).
  5. Dropped with PCTools ThreatFire (low detection rate, missed a Bagle).

Living and learning.

I don’t see really a change. Comodo 3 is in learning mode and that’s a bit of a p*** in the a** but I can suffer for this excellent firewall. Avast is doing fine. Only problem is each time it automatically updates, there is a Vista Authorization screen popping up (apart from the Comodo 3 learning mode alerts that will be temporary I hope…). Is there a way to make the updates run like in XP Pro? I’m in administrator mode. Anyway I’m happy to have got rid of Norton, it’s like an elephant empty inside and you don’t know about its effective protection.

No. With Vista, the UAC feature requires user manual intervention. The same as you try to invoke avast program update from the ‘a’ blue icon on system tray.

Didn’t have to worry about removing all that crapware that usually comes with PC’s because I installed Vista myself ;D

Good for you  ;D

My new Dell Laptop came without any crapware. It was ordered that way. Just had them install the operating system.

It’s easy, isn’t it?
Why when people buy a laptop don’t order “his future lap” without crapware as you did??

Rafel,
It’s not available from most vendors. They make to much money selling it with the crapware. >:(

There is another alternative:

It’s true :frowning:
Now, where i live there are stores(with the same name, i don’t know english word, in my language is “franquicia” like MCDonalds or Burger King ;D[well i prefer mediterranean diet because i always have had this kind of food, i’m lucky, i live in a mediterranean country]you can order a personal laptop, you choose processor, RAM, motherboard…

As always, sorry my english, hahha, but i learnt a lot of english here, more than 10 years studing english at school. I Spain learn languages at school is very hard. They think spanish language is the best language in the world, and if you speak spanish the others must speak spanish too, hahha.I usually don’t speak spanish, i speak catalan(and AVAST has got a catalan version ;D) and we have got a joke:
If you speak three languages, you are trilingual.
If you speak two languages, you are bilingual.
If you speak only a language, you are spanish. LOL

Rafel,

The word “franquicia” in English is Franchise.
Your English is great. I spend the Winter on the Costa del Sol, and have been trying to learn better Spanish for 7 years, but don’t even come close to you.

Well my reply on this as you know is that almost every new one computers sells with Vista Home Premium pre-installed. Usually, you don’t need a tech to install it, although it didn’t detect my mouse and keyboard on the first trial (it said of not shutting off the computer, but I had to do it). Franchises like Staples, FutureShop, BestBuy sell pcs like that now. My Acer must have had a deal with Norton Internet Suite because they keep sending me messages about starting the trial activation of 90 days and buying the suite at 30% discount. They also say it is best suited to Acer hardware and Vista Home Premium, So far I removed the whole suite, I’m with Avast Home Edition and with Comodo 3 beta and everything goes as a charm!!! So they do that for $$$.
