I have Avast Free installed. What happens when the year is up? Do I have to download the (then new) version or does the current 1-year subscription just roll over?

Hardly dumb, what would be dumb is not asking the question if it is something you are concerned with.
When the time comes and your 1st years registration is about to expire the avastUI will let you know. All you have to do at that point is repeat the original process of registration via the avastUI. You don’t have to download avast again.
