I’m new to this forum, and would welcome your feedback.
At present, a full scan is now in excess of 15 hours. Is this typical of avast 8?
The scan, at 55%, has found 87 infected files.
I’m ready to move on to some other method[s]. Would like to fix these issues, if possible, within the next day or two.
Suggestions to speed this process along would be great, and thanks in advance.
It rather depends on what your scan settings are (did you include all files & archived, etc.) and the amount of date to be scanned ?
Why did you initiate the full scan ?
Another issue is that when avast does make a detection the scan automatically goes into a higher sensitivity.
But to see a full scan duration regardless of scan settings isn’t usual.
However to have found 87 infected files so far is also very high, can you give some examples of the files found to be infected ?
e.g. file name, location and malware name of the detection.
I selected the Full System Scan option, and clicked on More Details to view its progress.
Unfortunately, it does not show a complete list of the files. But, only of each “processed file” as it scans individually.
If a full list of these files can be enabled within avast 8 for viewing, then I’d like to do so.
Do you have a file infector? I’ve never seen a count that high other then from specialists doing videos. It seems unlikely Avast! would let so many things through the shields. I’d send it to the lab when it’s done. Does CPU speed matter when scanning?
For a bit of history. This pc belongs to a friend, who has extremely minimal knowledge of safe-computing habits.
With this in mind, the pc never had AV software, firewall, or anything security related. So, through time the pc got to this condition. I installed avast 8 myself, from flash drive, to help with getting the pc up-to-speed.
Scanning progress is now at 17 hrs. and 25 mins, with only 61% progress, 48.1GB of data tested, and with 102 infected files.
I will check back for replies upon return, in approx 7 hrs., and would certainly appreciate all who can assist me in getting rid of this stuff.
With the scan complete, at this writing, avast 8 states of “164 Infected Files.”
From viewing the results, in High Severity most are JS Script, JS Downloader. There’s also Win32 instances in Low Severity (Adware-AQL, FunWeb, Gamevance, and Mywebsearch PUPs). I also see a Status of "Error: Archive is password protected (42056), and have no idea what this means. These relate to flashplayer11x32_mssa_aih.exe…
I’ve did the best I can to, briefly, explain this scenario.
Would it be ok to delete the PUPs, at least, at this juncture?
Files that can’t be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspect/infected, just can’t be scanned. In this case Adobe has taken to password protecting its flash player files/updates and is normal.
Deletion is never a good first action (you have none left), so follow the advice to move to the chest.
…and thank you, for your feedback. Sadly, avast 8 on this affected pc has expired, after installing it three (3) days ago. The system tray icon has an X on it, showing all 8 shields disabled. Choosing to APPLY the files to move all to the Chest wasn’t successful. What can I say?
In exiting the scan results, the application recommended a Boot scan. This is underway right now. So, I’ll just take it from there.
