Need help with my resident e-mail scanner:
He is constanlty checking for some e-mail and reports trojans but there is no e-mail client active in memory.
I have tryed also removing all of my e-mail clients like Outlook express and Thunderbird but still
AVAST reports trojans in my e-mail that does not exists anymore. I’we checked my system with boot scanner but there is no viruses found.
Can somebody help me with that?
Some more information would help.
What is your OS ?
Are these outbound alerts, I assume so (since I haven’t heard of a way to receive email without an email address and logging on to collect it) ?
Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast icon), Warning section, this contains information on all avast detections.
If it is as I suspect your system could be sending out emails and it doesn’t have to have an email client installed some of these Trojan Spam bots come with their own SMTP engine.
If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode.
- Ewido, a.k.a. avg anti-spyware If using winXP. or a-Squared free if using win98/ME.
The OS is Windows XP SP1
Problem solved but on hard way: I’we reinstalled Windows using Repair option so that all my settings are preserved and VOILA! Resident e-mail scanner is not giving me hard time anymore.
But, again, that is a hard way sollution. Is there something better?
P.S. I’we encountered the same problem on another machine with Windows 2000 server edition installed and I don’t have installation disk, so the problem remains. I’we also checked both machines with AD-AWARE 1.06 and he reported that there is no spyware.
Again without information it is hard to advise, if they are outbound emails you should download and run the above programs and report their findings.
I have no experience in server editions of windows and avast Home/Pro doesn’t support server version of windows. So I don’t know what to suggest.
Detection rates of the other programs suggested by David are, in my opinion, very better than from Lavasoft.
Did you did a try?
