E-mail Spoofing

Two posters on an AOL Board were inquiring about receiving E-mails from themselves, which they obviously didn’t send. They wanted to know what was up and how to stop it.

From what I vaguely know, I think this is E-mail Spoofing, isn’t it? If it IS that, what should I suggest to them as to how to stop it? Or should I send them over here to you guys? ;D I’ve only heard of it. I’m not familiar with how to put the brakes on it. Is it related to any actual Malware on the E-mail Spoofing victims’ computers … which can be removed with any particular Anti-Malware Application?

Google is your friend. A simple search for “E-mail Spoofing” brings up many hits.
You can also use a program like MailWasher to help scan your emails before they are downloaded to your computer.
Check the email header of suspected emails this will tell you the origin of the email.

I have a filter in MailWasher called imaginatively, ‘MeMe’ for emails purporting to have been sent to me by me, you could just as easily set this up in your email client or another anti-spam tool.

Thanks, David! I relayed the Info to those Posters about Brainwasher. Wait a minute. Oops! I mean … Mailwasher.

You’re welcome.

I think MailWasher was one of the best pieces of software I bought way back (version 3.0 I think) and I have had free updates right through to version 6.1. It saves having to download spam to filter it, essential as a dial-up user.
