Earthlink POP mail interference by AVAST8 in Thunbderbird 17.0.6

Since approximately 4/15/13 (April) AVAST8 irregularly interferes with POP3 e-mail client receiving. When the POP3 server is quarried, TB returns an error message: “An error occurred with the POP3 mail server. Mail server pop.earthlink.net responded: (no message).”
This happens on four separate computers and five earthlink user accounts.
Thunderbird forum has no solution.
Earthlink confirms POP3 settings as correct.

Settings are:
Win XP Pro SP3
Thunderbird 17.0.6
Incoming mail settings:
Server type: POP Mail Server
server name: pop.earthlink.net
port: 110
username: [myname]@earthlink.net
connection security: none
authentication method: password transmitted insecurely

After much experimentation the cure is to stop the mail shield.
Anyone have a similar experience or a better solution?
