eBay users are attacked by botnet

7 September 2007

"Israeli company Aladdin discovered a botnet that use brute-force techniques to attack eBay user, stealing their passwords and money. The botnet was discovered few days ago, but researchers believe it exists for more than week.

Botnet was created using new, unnamed yet Trojan. It exploits old iFrame vulnerability to infect computers. The Trojan uses similar attack techniques as hacker tool Mpack. After infecting a machine Trojan connects it to the botnet. The network of zombie-computers tries to steal passwords and logins of eBay users. If it do, it logs into their accounts using API provided by eBay.

Aladdin discovered more than 300 websites that spread malicious code. Unconfirmed report claim that some users have fallen victims of cybercriminals".

This is one reason why I don’t trust eBay.

Ebay has long since been the center of attack from hackers.

They’ve needed to look into security for their site for many years now.

They won’t though as this would mean the site to possibly be down for a period of time to implement it. Too many folks visiting…spending money and believe me the hackers thrive on this.

I don’t like Ebay…they are most definitely a target in more ways than one.
Caution to all those that shop on their website.
Thanks for the information flygirl.

Never used it and it will stay that way… never felt like I am missing anything. All I need I can buy in stores. Sharing your personal info and data online, posting your credit card numbers and some other stuff up there is plain stupid… regardless of how secure their site is, or at least they are trying to make you believe how secure everything is… no thanks!

While I have never registered nor bought anything on Ebay, I have used it for research. But, I have personally known people who have sold as well as bought things on that place. It’s amazing what some people will pay and think they got a good deal.

Some people make a good honest living by selling on ebay. There are many good sellers that do not inflate prices. I very much enjoy the Self Representing Artists section. Some people cannot work regular jobs due to disabilities and they find ebay to be the answer to their problems. I’m sure ebay has some problems they need to attend to.

Yes that’s true, indeed… but I am afraid the addressed issue here was “is eBay” safe to use ? How safe is to do transactions over eBay ? And not, is it useful or not… I am sure there is a great bunch of decent people who run good businesses over eBay, but in the same time, I am sure they are also affected with these security issues… and worst of all, it’s killing their business as well.

True that was the point of the thread, but there were also negatives stated about it that didn’t bring anything to the thread. My comment wasn’t any different. I don’t find my comment any different than CharleyO’s, but I didn’t see anyone reminding him what the thread was about. You have a good day.

I am sorry you felt that I was “reminding” you or anyone else… I was just trying to point that out, nothing less, nothing more. This was just a healthy discussion on the topic. Not a single offending word or anything like that.

Thanks, you have a great day too.
