Eicar Virus email test

I visited this site http://www.webmail.us/testvirus? which sends the eicar virus via email to test your anti virus capabilities all were caught but number 27. Can someone explain why this email got by avast? I know I’m using the 60 day trial version 4.5 professional, but I’d like to purchase a yearly subscription… So I was putting avast through its paces and this came up.

here’s the test info:
Test #27: Eicar virus within a ZIP file that has been manipulated to evade detection by some anti-virus software by changing the uncompressed size to zero within the ZIP file headers. **New

As you can read in the discription, the zip was modified. So it is not a standard archived format anymore. Avast (as well as other av’s) can only handle archives if they know how to unpack them.

Thats because avast! is still using the old (old, not outdated) ZIP decompressor which still contains this glitch. Don’t worry, files inside ZIP will be detected upon extraction or when you attempt to run the files from within ZIP archive.

fpkjr,

In any event, once the zip was extracted, Avast would scan the files within it and at that point detect any virus.

Thanks for the explanation… I sent a email to support with this ? but didn’t receive a reply so i thought I’d post it here. You guys are great. Have a great 05
Thanks again.

Does anybody from Alwil confirm this?
Will be the next update include a new decompressor?

It’s news to me ???

I think we need clarification from the Avast team.
