email attachment problems

I have always been able to open email attachments, which although sent most of the time using word, Avast converts them into doc.safe format (Outpost Safe file).

Recently I returned from a two week break and had to download a few updates, which seems to have cocked things up.

Email attachments are now being converted from word into doc.aq format for some unknown reason. When I try to open the attachment, I am told that this file does not have a programme associated with it for performing this action and to create an association … etc etc.

I cannot find a way of associating a .dq file. I’ve tried stopping attachment quarantine. I’ve tried renaming the file. I’ve done a full virus scan and now about to tear my hair out.

Has anyone got any ideas - I’m stumped!

???

That is your firewall or B9 (if you have it) not avast! if you click on the attachment with the .doc.safe a window should pop-up which ask permission, this should tell exactly what has changed the file extension.

(moved to correct thread)

Thanks for this DavidR, I will give this a try. This is really bugging me! hope it works!!

Well, a window does pop up which first tells me document name and then type - which is Outpost Safe file.

I click on this and then a pop up box says opening C\documents and Settings\admin\local settings\temporary internet files\content 1E5\S7HQ6JL\IC150904.doc

What does all this mean and will I be able to fix it? Hope you or someone can help?

That’s your clue, ‘Outpost’ is I assume your firewall, if so check your settings and email attachment actions.

H there!

I have changed my settings by opening outpost, then options, then plug-ins setup, then clicking on attachment quarantine and then stop. This seems to have worked. Word documents are now recieved in word format and are not being converted to doc.aq. What concerns me though is my email attachment level?!?

Just thought you might like to know and thanks for your advice!!
