I just installed avast home. It grayed the attachment (URL) I sent myself so that I could not open or or save it. How do I allow attachments if they do not contain viruses.?
Thanks.
This is not avast at work, it doesn’t gray out attachments. avast! only warns of infected or suspicious emails/attachments.
What is your email program, I’m guessing OE which has this function, Tools, Options, Security? If you are using another email program check for a similar function.
That did it. "Untick “don’t allow saving or opening of attachments…”
Thanks.
Next question: Why do my account definitions in OE change? It seems to be causing difficulty in accessing the accounts.
Are you using Windows 98 or Millenium?
Avast need to change your settings to ‘redirect’ your messages to its scanner. So they can be scanned and only after this they will be delivered to your inbox
This is not necessary (changing into the settings) in Windows 2000 or XP.
Sorry I didn’t write my complet setup: PIII, WinME, IE6, OE6
avast scans your emails before they arrive in your inbox they are routed through a localhost (on your PC) proxy, then they can be scanned and if clear passed to your email program to store in the inbox.
In order for avast to do this it needs to change the account settings with win95, win98, winME. This isn’t required in NT based OSes winNT, win2k and XP.
If you have Windows 98\Me, the change of the login settings is normal while using avast. See http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=display;board=2;threadid=7913;start=0#msg64228
With Win98 SE you should have:
pop3 server= smtp server = 127.0.0.1
username = mail.server.coml#user or mail.server.com#user@server.com
smtp authentication enabled and the username there = mail.server.coml#user or mail.server.com#user@server.com
