Email certificate

My first post here.

I am running Avast! Free/Windows 7.

One of my email programs is informing me that the certificate for mail.btinternet.com (issued 19 March 1919) is not trusted because it hasn’t been verified by a trusted authority using a secure signature.

The certificate appears to have been issued by avast! Web/Mail Shield Root.

Could someone explain?

i’m getting the same warning lately in outlook 365, despite disabled HTTPS scans under Settings > Important Shields > Webshield. However there is no such setting under mailshield. The sites in question are protected by valid “Let’s encrypt” certificates. Avast has no business replacing that with their own custom certificate if it invalidates the valid one.

Using the Avast free version on a Mac.

I’m having a very similar problem with the Postbox client, complaining about the certificate for gmail.

Both Avast and Postbox have a supposed fix for this:

But, both require access to settings/etc. that don’t apparently exist in the free version - esp. the Search field, that allows one to get to the Avast Geek section. So, I’m unable to fix this.

The problem occurs repeatedly, making email completely unusable. Often, if I restart the email client, the problem goes away - for a while. So, I’m able to work for now. But, if it persists, I’ll have to uninstall Avast and switch to some other antivirus.

I don’t mind that I don’t get some of the functionality of Avast in the free version, but breaking something as fundamental as this (a problem they know about), without the means to fix it is really unacceptable.

Repair Avast:

  1. Avast GUI → Settings → Troubleshooting
  2. Click on ‘REPAIR APP’.
  3. Follow instructions.
  4. Reboot.
