Email/Desktop Problems

I had a nasty email virus hit me a couple of weeks ago… went right past Avast. I have since cleaned it up and the computer is running fine now… however… my spinning Avast logo is now nowhere to be found in the lower right hand section of my desktop screen like it used to… and I don’t get anymore automatic virus database updates and I can no longer FWD any email or send any email with an attachment… they all bounce back to me as rejected… seems everyone else’s server thinks I am sending a suspicious email… any ideas??? I’ve gone back into my settings on AVAST and nothing has changed there… been running it for about 3 years now. Thanks!!

;D Hi :

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

Do they say exactly what is suspicious about the emails ?

Set the Internet Mail provider to High sensitivity, this should then recognise if you are sending out lots of identical email (spam bot).

What is your firewall, as this should also prevent unauthorised outbound connections ?

If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode and report the findings (it should product a log file).

  1. SUPERantispyware On-Demand only in free version.
  2. MalwareBytes Anti-Malware freeware version http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe, right click on the link and select Save As or Save File (As depending on your browser), save it to a location where you can find it easily later. Also Try this tool, RogueRemover, available here http://www.malwarebytes.org/rogueremover.php

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

May I suggest that you first download and save the latest version of avast! as Tech suggested in step 5.

That way you will not have to go on-line unprotected after you’ve totally removed the damaged version of avast! from your computer.
