Email Error Message

I’m wondering if anyone can identify the following error message and whether it has anything to do with Avast functioning improperly:

Task ‘Balcab Mail - Sending’ reported error (0x800CCC69) : ’ The server responded: 550 5.7.1 mail j58CYEDP024873 from xx.xxx.xxx.xx rejected by DCC’

I removed my DNS from the above message. I use Outlook 2002 and about a week ago, I starting receiving this message. The Send and Receive works, i.e., I can send and receive all emails, but just as it finishes, this message pops up and Outlook continues to work and work. I have to manually cancel the operation.

The funny thing is that I use the same version of Avast Home 4.6.665 on my laptop which uses Outlook Express and I never have the problem. This leads me to believe that it is not my ISP but something to do with Avast, but I can’t be sure.

I receive mail from 3 different POP3 accounts and the one mentioned in the error message above is the only one with this problem.

Paul

Paul, do you use any spam killer?
DCC could be Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse: http://www.rhyolite.com/anti-spam/dcc/

I don’t use spam filters of any type. I have in the past but not for about 6 months. It can’t be any residual registry setting left over from the deinstall of these programs because my mail has functioned perfectly until about a week ago.

My ISP is very unresponsive (cable company, need I say more) and I haven’t found any other reason for this behaviour. There is no corrupted email “blocking” the mail delivery because I can send and receive all my mail and I’ve checked the mailbox through the website mailbox. And, as I said, it only occurs with my desktop running Outlook 2002, not the laptop running Outlook Express. It has to be something in the Avast setup on my desktop, but I don’t know what to look for.

Paul,

it would appear that your cable company is employing spam filtering on messages being sent by its users.

DCC is a service that scans e-mail being sent and based on content, number of people the message is being sent to and other rules that are vaguely described it will decide that a particular message is spam and reject it instead of sending it.

Is it possible that you are sending out some mail from your desktop to a group or groups that you do not send from your laptop?

Alanrf, many thanks for your response. First, the answer to your question is no. I can send the a message to a person or group on the laptop with no problem. The exact same email to the same person or group on the desktop results in the error I described earlier.

I bit the bullet (CHF 2.13 per minute) and called support out of sheer frustration. They asked me to create an email message with a “suspicious” subject line. Apparently a “from” - “to” phrase, e.g., “From Harry to Paul” as a subject is viewed by DCC as suspicious. I did it and the email was sent, accepted by their mail server, and relayed back to my desktop with no problem, except at the end of the Send and Receive, the error message appeared and Outlook churned and churned.

I also became aware of another problem. I maintain several websites for friends and clients and realized only recently that the number of customer requests that are usually forwarded to my email address came to a halt. The ISP support person said that is was due to the fact that my hosting company’s server does not support reverse DNS/PTR. I thought it did, but checked with them anyhow, and sure enough it does support reverse DNS/PTR. The support person also checked to see if the hosting company’s servers were blacklisted and the were not.

So, my conclusion is that there is something wrong with my ISP’s setup of DCC. But, why only with my desktop and not the laptop? That can’t be and yet it is.

Hmmmmmm…

I’ll post the solution when and if I receive it.

Paul

Hi Paul, could you check if Outlook uses the correct character-set for mails ?
You should be able to check this in extra’s>options.
Also, if you try to use the RTF-formatting is the message still rejected ?

Just a thought…

Fast

Hi fast

Outlook is using the correct character set for all emails. I haven’t made any real changes in the setup for years.

My messages html or plain text are not rejected, they are sent and I receive all that are sent to me. It’s just at the end of the Send and Receive operation this error message pops up. I receive the error message when I send html mails and also when I send plain text mails.
