Ever since I upgraded to Avast Pro 4.8 from the free version I have been experiencing difficulties in sending emails. I have Outlook 2003 and periodically, without rhyme or reason, the Avast is changing my SMTP outgoing mail server to an IP address. It is also changing my outgoing SMTP port server setting to a different number. This is causing my outgoing mail to become garbled to the recipient. It’s really frustrating as most of my emails are to clients, and additionally, I have a tracking program on my emails which needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled everytime I have to change the settings (which is several times a day) Has anyone experienced this or has any helpful hints? Thanks
Please tell us are you using the Outlook/Exchange provider for avast or the Internet Mail provider?
What is this tracking program - that sounds like a much more likely cause of changes than avast.
avast does not change any parameters in Outlook 2003 - server, ports any … sorry.
I am using Outlook 2003 Internet Mail provider. I am also using Read Notify Email tracker. I was using this prior to upgrading without any problems. Also had the problem while I had the tracker uninstalled. Contacted my DSL company and they thought it was spyware, however Full system scan has come up clean. Full system virus scan also came up clean. So I am stumped. I know that I read that Avast 4 had similar problems with POP 3 and SMTP settings being changed in Outlook Express, so I was hoping that maybe someone else had experienced the same thing with Avast Pro.
Sorry, I forgot to add I am using XP Tablet Edition
The recommended provider for Outlook 2003 is the Outlook Exchange provider of avast and for Outlook it is far superior to the Internet Mail provider,
avast (free or Pro) does not nor ever has in a Windows 2003 system in any way, shape or form, modified your Outlook settings. avast had not got a clue (if avast’s future depended on it) that you are using Outlook … Outlook Express, Eudora, Lotus Notes, Thunderbird, The Bat, Netscape Mail … you name it.
Your DSL help desk is, sorry to say, probably about as well trained as my (very well known) cable company. That is they cannot tell a mail client from a Web browser and the usual answer is “turn off your antivirus” … then " turn off your firewall" and then “well you should use our Webmail service”.
Please try the Outlook/Exchange provider for avast … check the settings of it when Outlook 2003 is up and running and let us know if there are any anomalies (like “Waiting for a subsystem to start”). Ideally, when you start Outlook 2003 you will see a splash screen from avast telling you that the service is starting.
Please let us know how it goes.
I stopped the Internet Mail but the Exchange server says its running but waiting for a sub system to start. I have 6 of 8 processes running.
Try:
Outlook > Tools > Options > Other tab > Advanced options > Add-In manager > Check the avast4 add-in box
Sorry it is such a long path
Thanks. It was already checked. I was just looking through all the knowledge base questions. I found instructions for the Mail protection wizard and it talks about 4.5 version not requiring manual settings but 4.0 may. Anyways, it talks about the SMTP server and how to set it. It says that some systems may not be compatible with 4.5 and may have to use settings for 4.0 so may be this could be my problem. I am going to look at it more in the morning. Time for bed!
