Completely : about POPs and SMTPs and IMAPs…I use hotmail or MSN.com for email…
does Avast! scan those emails or do you have to be using Outlook for that to happen? How do you tell scanning is taking place?
Thanks…

You say that “use hotmail or MSN.com for email…” but not the most important thing, do you view your email using your browser (webmail) ?
If so that doesn’t use the POP3, IMAP or SMTP protocol so won’t be scanned by the Internet Mail provider, but it is covered by the Web Shield as it uses HTTP protocol to view the email.
I guess I use the brower…In IE I go to msn.com, then to email…so what do you have to do to have Avast scan? Like I said…kinda :
avast is scanning, like I kinda said, if you use your browser to view your email the web shield scans it.
If you use an email client like Outlook then the email accounts of hotmail and msn.com have to be POP3 email accounts, as Outlook can use the MS DeltaSync to convert webmail so it can be downloaded into Outlook. DeltaSync is an MS proprietary protocol, which can’t be scanned by avast or any other AV for that matter as they don’t have access to the DeltaSync protocol.
