I’m a newbie, so I guess that entitles me to a stupid question? :![]()
Since a virus would be detected by the standard shield the moment it tries to do anything, isn’t scanning the emails that might contain it redundant?
What am I missing here?
Some malware contain their own email programs. The email provider will alert you if one of these types of malware starts sending email from your computer. Otherwise, you might not know until your ISP sends you a warning that you are sending out too much email, that you are a spammer, and that your connection privileges may be terminated. The email provider takes very little resources and could save you a lot of grief if your computer gets infected with such malware.
Thanks Charley.
Followup question: Wouldn’t my firewall stop :-X that unauthorized email program from doing its thing?
Which firewall do you use? How it is configurated?
Zone Alarm; none of that stupid inbound traffic only firewall. Outbound mailsafe protection is enabled.
That’s belt AND suspenders in my book ;D.
I’m not used to ZA mail protection, couldn’t help with sure. Sorry.
Thanks anyway. With the info in your first reply, I’m pretty sure I have a handle on things.
I was asking because some people I know have been having issues with another AV (serves them well! ;)) fighting for port 110 access when mail filtering was active.
Bottom line: I switched them over to AVAST and everything is now fine!
