I have Dell notebook with Vista Home Premium. Does the email scanning check incoming email messages?

avast generally scans your standard non-encrypted pop3 email.

However it depends on several things, which you don’t mention.
Your email program, if you are using web mail, your ISP email server settings (if they insist on using SSL and the ports being used) ?

You should be able to see if your email is being scanned:
The avast ‘a’ icon when email is scanned.
Another icon appears in the notification tray, see image.
Check the email headers as avast would add an entry that it had been scanned.
Check the Last scanned: and Scanned count: fields in the Internet Mail provider, these should be changing as emails are scanned.
