Email won't scan and Avast wont' stamp inbound/outbound emails

Hi there!

this is the 2nd time I’m writing this but I’m sure someone has the answer to fix the situation with my computer.

First I have a 233mx , 64 meg of ram, with Windows 98se. I run spybots, spywareblaster along with Avast 4.5.505 Beta version.

I have run repair on Avast a few times. The vpd updates have updated many times since the program has updated.

I use to have Avast 4.1 on this system. I noticed it would scan files loading and shutting down, and also scan my emails in EMC. It is the spam program I use to filter spam before going to my mail program Juno/Netzero. I noticed when I had 4.1 it scanned the emails in EMC and wonder why not now. I didn’t set anything up for smtp server to send emails in EMC. I use Zonealarm (not paid version) also.

Now that I use Avast 4.5.505 Beta version my EMC program is scanned but the emails downloaded thru EMC do not get checked like it did in 4.1.
Can someone help me fix this situation. I have done all I can on my end. I want Avast once again to check the emails as they are downloaded in EMC.

the next thing is the stamp for inbound and outbound saying in the emails that things are cleaned or not. The stamp hasn’t worked yet. I use Juno/Netzero for email program. Juno pop is pop.juno.com, and smtp is smtp.juno.com, and Netzero is pop.netzero.com, and smtp.netzero.com.
I have checked with Outlook Express to see if the stamp is working there but Juno doesn’t allow to check emails with Outlook Express anymore.
Can someone help me? by the way I don’t have the SMTP preference setup at all in Avast. Does that really make a difference?

I think though that juno uses netzero server first…but that be silly? juno is affiliated with netzero (UOL is there company name)

Here is the information from the avast.ini file-
[MailScanner]
DefaultPopServer=pop.juno.com
DefaultSmtpServer=smtp.juno.com
DefaultImapServer=imap.aol.com
ShowTrayIcon=1
UseDefaultSmtp=0
AutoRedirect=0
AutoSetProtection=0
SmtpListen=127.0.0.1:25
PopListen=127.0.0.1:110
ImapListen=127.0.0.1:143

I added the AutoRedirect=0 to the mailscanner.

I would appreciate your help VLK, or others…

thanks

I can’t solve your problem. I can only guess: if Juno cannot be downloaded by Outlook Express, is it a pop3/smtp server email? If not, I’m affraid avast won’t scan it. The version 4.5 has a new email detection, automatic, does not require user interaction. But, in fact, it scans pop3/smpt/imap ports and scan your messages.

Anyway, spam killer applications need manually change email account settings. This is by design:
In 4.1, it was like: mail client > avast > spam killer > mail server
In 4.5, it’s like: mail client > spam killer > avast > mail server

Hi there…

Juno and Netzero won’t allow to check email through Outlook Express that is correct. I use Juno’s email program anyway. I tried Outlook Express to see if it would work. And they were correct (juno and netzero) I am not able to use Outlook Express to check email.

Must be a way around this yes?

besides the stamp for Avast for inbound/outbound checking isn’t working still.

laterzzzz

Why? Wrong configuration or the email servers are not pop3/smtp?

Only if your email use pop3/smtp in my opinion. Or you will need a plugin.
Can you use MS Outlook (not the Express) to get/send mail?

Can you see in the headers of the messages (Right click the message, choose Properties and Details), for instance:

X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0XXX-X, XX/XX/2004), Inbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean

Technical
Juno and Netzero (Free e-mail Version) is not pop 3 the e-mail is online only.
It’s therefore not possible to scan that e-mail.

So, a plugin is needed. Or, at least, the user must set the on-access protection to High level (scanning all files: open/create/modify).

HI there!
thanks for the information. Have made changes to Avast 4.5.504 to the avast standard shield and changed the files to scan all, and the sensitivity to scan is not high it has to be customized for some reason.

Is there anyway around Juno and Netzero? Juno is for right now a download email/webmail service and so is Netzero. In Dec they plan on going to - no downloading email from the server to the computer (one owns), and only way to check emails is to go online and check thru email as said in the other email.
so it has a pop… when Outlook Express worked with Netzero I did set it up for pop3 server as pop.netzero.com and the smtp as smtp.netzero.com
so I don’t know how to check the stamp for virus inbound and outbound yet since juno/netzero isn’t set up correctly when downloading email.

Guess leaves to get a different ISP… and that isn’t what I wanted. Anybody know any nationwide or in Wisconsin (ISP-dialup)-let me know?..

thanks and if you have any more suggestions you can write to me at mecha999x@gmail.com
And I will check back here for more info…

I’ve been saying there isn’t a way around because it’s ot a pop3/smtp server :-
Maybe, anybody knows another way. I’ll glad to learn too. :-*

Both Juno and NetZero offer POP3 service but you have to pay for it. The free e-mail accont is now strictly online (Web based) Their $9.95 and faster $14.95 ISP service offers pop3 or web based e-mail. The choice is yours.
Any Web Based email isn’t scanned by avast however anything you open within the email will be scanned if your setting are on high.
Hope that clarifies matters.

Juno/Net Zero/Hotmail are not pop3 email service, it is web based (so the avast’s pop3/smtp email provider doesn’t directly protect it). Web based email is simply your email being viewed in the same way you browser the internet. The pages (that display your email) are downloaded into your Temporary Internet folder, just like regular web pages and displayed on your browser screen.

The Standard Shield will scan your files (as they are downloaded into your Temporary Internet folder) when sensitivity is set to High. You can round this ‘problem’ using 3rd party applications to download the Hotmail messages through the pop3 server (PopHotmail, for instance)

thanks DavidR and the rest!

Like I said probably be best looking to another company because Juno and Netzero do not have great ISP service imho, and their servers allow too many spams to get through. Have gotten a few viruses thru juno. (UOL)

You’re right 8)

Bigbassfish1

Have gotten a few viruses thru juno.
Just remember, Juno didn't send those viruses. If you paid for either Juno or NetZero, you would then have Pop3 service available to you and, avast! would be able to check your email.

Hi there All

Well, I went back from the Beta version to the Home version and tried that to send email with inbound/outbound stamps. It finally worked. It took a little bit but it works. And hopefully stays that way from now on.
Here is the scoop. I’m still using Win 98se, 233mmx, and 64 meg of ram.
I’m using EMC (email filter/spam program), and email client software is Incredimail. It is working now. It scans email going out /and in finally.
I have the Home 4.5.518 version.

I have thought of going with Mozilla Thunderbird as the email client but maybe later. All I know not able to use OE (outlook express).

I had to use the mail wizard 2 times, but finally got it. I had to manually set it up. I also had to change from normal scanning to high. And changed/customed to scan all files in avast scanning files.
I do however get a subsystem is waiting to start with OE for some reason.

EMC does work with Avast guys. It has so far! it automatically sent email from that Email management control program to Incredimail. Yes, Avast worked fine/great between the two programs.

oh by the way gmail if I’m on the web (IE browser) will be scanned automatically.

oh by the way hotmail online (IE browser) will be scanned automatically. If checking email.

:slight_smile: :wink: :smiley: :stuck_out_tongue:

thanks . if you have questions, I could get into details
email me at mecha999x@gmail.com

We’re glad things are working for you but, you have some facts stated incorrectly.
avast! 4.5.518 Scans All pop3 accounts automatically. which include both incredimail and OE.
Secondly, Web based mail including Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo mail,is not scanned by the mail scanner since it only scans mail which reaches your computer. It is however scanned by the on-access scanner as is anything else that is opened.
If someone has a question regarding the use of avast, I’m sure it would best be answered here on the forum.
Enjoy the protection of avast!

Hi Bob, Vlk and Igor and rest …

Hey there Bob I didn’t say thru an email client. I said IE browser…checked online (IE Browser). Avast will check it!!!

that goes again with Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail are checked by Avast.

Get my facts correct.? not to sound rude but read what I posted. I didn’t say Avast email scanner scanned it. I just said Avast scanned it with IE browser. Meaning if you check your web based email online Avast will scan it.

laterzzzzz for now

Meaning if you check your web based email online Avast will scan it.
Bigbassfish1 You are partially correct. Avast will eventually scan it. However, Pop3 is before the fact and Web based is after the fact. There is a big difference. However, both Hotmail and yahoo are scanned by their own virus programs which are used by MS and Yahoo respectively.

Hi,My avast anti-virus quit scanning and announcing my emails had viruses and not putting the messages in that the emails are virus free.
What can I do about that? I am using Home Version Trial period. I have Windows ME, with plenty of memory.
I have a Pop3 email account, and aVast used to work with it, but not now. And, yes, I have all the blocks checked for scanning and notifying.
Thanks,

Are you digitally signing the messages? That stops the stamping from working.
