Email won't work with Program Update 5.1.889

Last night I did the upgrade from the previous version to 5.1.889. I’m using windows vista on my laptop. I was having major problems installing, my computer would lockup. Finally in safe mode I uninstalled Avast, rebooted to regular mode and installed 5.1.889 and it worked fine except now I can’t receive email using windows email (vista) unless I turn off the Avast email protection to scan incoming email. I can’t figure out what is wrong and some of the posts here are from 2003 and forward, I can’t seem to find anything on this that is current.
Any help or direction will be greatly appreciated.

Which is your firewall?
Your email provider? GMail?
Windows email is “Windows Live Mail”?

well normally I have my firewall off because of my router. My email provider is timewarner and its windows email. But since you mentioned the firewall, I went and check it and it was back on. So I turned it off, restarted my email scan and “Wella” its working. I’ve had my firewall turned off forever, not sure how it got back on. But thank you for the help.
I really feel stupid now. :-[

imemine, you don’t need to feel stupid… This is troubleshooting work…
One firewall could be on. Why did you disable all of them and rely only in the router (if it has one)?

I usually keep the fire wall off because I was told I don’t need it with a router and also for reasons like the one above. LOL

Router gives you inbound protection.
Firewall (software) could give you both inbound and outbound (malware connection, spam bots…) protection.
