I have recently installed the Avast anti virus and every time I turn the PC on after a while I get a message saying Ash.WebSv.exe has encountered a problem and will now close.
Do I need to uninstall the anti virus and start again and when this happens does it mean I am not protected. Thank you
Which is your Windows? 98, Me, XP?
Do you use any other antivirus in your computer? Seems not… But did you have in the past?
Which is your browser?
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.
If this does not help, uninstall avast from Control Panel first > boot > use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation (read http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_uninstall_util.html) > boot
Thanks, I will try the repair and if not then remove and download a new copy if it does not work. I am on XP Home have had AVG before I got Avast. No other anti virus I have spyware programmes and XP firewall. Will let you know how I get on thank you. 8)
Sorry to add to the list of questions …
but have you used the Filseclab firewall on your system?
Never heard of it so I guess not. The problem occurs whether I use IE6 or Firefox and \I have repaired it and it is still doing it but the real question is am I being protected otherwise I will have to get rid of Avast and go back to AVG as this is no good it seems.
Thanks can someone please answer the question am I protected when I get the message.? ???
I have tried all the suggestions repair and reloaded a new Avast but I still get the same problem any other suggestions please.
The only thing I can guess now is activate logging in WebShield:
- Edit \data\avast4.ini file
- Find the section [WebScanner]
- Add the line:
EnableLogging=1 - Restart Web Shield in XP (terminate and start again) or whole PC in case of Win98
- Browse (trying to access some webpages)
The log file are \data\log\ashwebsv.log and ashwebsv.ws.
They would be accessible when WebShield is terminated again.
Post them here or send by mail to rypacek@asw.cz
After that, disable the logging to avoid a big log file.
Hi :
How throughly did you REMOVE AVG PRIOR to installing
Avast ? Did you do MORE than just "uninstall" AVG,
like using a registry cleaner to delete items there ?
Good poing Spiritsongs. Bad antivirus uninstalling could bring unforsable troubles. :
