End Now Dialogue Box on Windows Shutdown

Hi,

I’ve been using Avast for a while and am really happy with it, however every now and then when shutting down i get the ‘End Now/Cancel’ dialogue box come up. The file path it displays starts with C:\Program Files\Alwil Software but then the box doesn’t have space to display anymore so i’m unsure which file it is that Windows seems unable to shutdown or how to stop it causing a problem.

It happens maybe every other shutdown.

Does anyone have any ideas, its not a major prob i admit, just one of those Windows annoyances that gets to you after a year! ;D

Thanks.

We will need more information to be able to help you:

  • Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
  • What avast! version?
  • Do you use a firewall? Which one?
  • Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system? Did you have in the past?
  • Any other security programs that could interfere?
  • In XP/Vista, is there any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

Hi,

Right its:

  • Windows XP Home, and its set to get auto updates so yes, it should be fully up to date.
  • Avast v4.8 Home Edition
  • Windows Firewall
  • No other anti virus installed (Windows one turned off so as to not conflict). No previous anti-virus installed since several PC reinstalls ago. However this is a problem i’ve had for a few years on and off with Avast.
  • No other security progs installed no.
  • The only thing i can see in the Error Logs that might coincide timewise is a warning which keeps popping up regarding Userenv, at least once or twice every day this week. Full description shows:

"Windows saved user H0L1YW0OD\Hollywood registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user’s registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account."

I’ve tried reinstalling, as well as the obvious reinstalls when i’ve reinstalled Windows/spring cleaned. I’ve done updates and uninstalled and reinstalled fresh up to date clients but like i say it always reoccurs here and there.

Thanks for your reply. Hope you can help.

Very difficult, for me, to troubleshoot the unknown…

If at least we can know which is this application or service…

Check the folder \data\log
Are there any files called unpXXXX (where XXXX is a random number) or *.mdmp there?
If so, send them to vlk (at) avast.com
They may contain more information about the problem (maybe a link to this thread).

Hi,

I’ve sent the files to you in an email as requested. There doesn’t seem to be anything contained within the mdmp files tho, but i did have an error and a warning file so i have included those.

Thanks for your help.

The only way to properly analyze such a problem is to create a full memory dump at the moment the problem is simulated.

Please see http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=71 for details…

Thanks

The problem that causes this message to be displayed is one known to Microsoft, and they released a fix for it which they called “User Profile Hive Cleaning Service”. You can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/DOWNLOADS/details.aspx?familyid=1B286E6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en
It has worked for me on 2 x XP-Home and one XP-Pro machines, all originally SP2, now SP3

Thanks guys. I’ve downloaded the fix from Microsoft and will see how it works. If it carries on happening i’ll do the memory dump and take it from there.
