Error 1006 when installing Avast

I keep getting this error when attempting to install avast! 4 Home Edition:

Setup Selfextract

An error 1006 (000003EE) has occured.
Last performed operation was:
opening the self-extract archive

Try to download setup file again.
If you use Internet Explorer, clear it’s cache before downloading:
Start->Control Panel->Internet Options and Delete Temporary Internet Files.

This is a brand new computer with nothing installed on it except Windows XP with service pack 2, Spybot Search and Destroy, Firefox and Thunderbird. I have downloaded multiple different versions of avast to ensure that the file wasn’t defective and always get the same result.

I have done everything listed in the following forum posts as well: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=15b52ad788f55016d0ecc0be231af01b&topic=12907.msg108969

W00T! Got it working finally, I just tried one more time with a another different dload and it worked!!

 Hi Mcconahey :

Brand new computers usually come with a "preexisting"
antivirus !? Usually that is either "bloatware" Norton or
McAfee and should be COMPLETELY removed ( uninstalled,
 etc ) .

I’m having the very same problem… I’ve tried everything suggested in other posts relating to this problem. I’ve disabled all anti-virus and firewall software (All I have currently is the windows firewall).

I had McAfee Security Center installed up until an hour ago, but due to that not doing it’s job correctly I removed it.

I have also tried AVG, and I am getting an error message when trying to install.

I am running Windows XP.

Any help would be greatfully appreciated as my computer is currently 0 protected

You have to ensure other AVs are uninstalled before installing avast as it can cause conflict problems.

McAfee has an uninstall tool that you could run to ensure any possible remnants are removed.
