error 183 --system will not scan

I am running a Windows ME system with a Pentium 3 processor with an 864 mhz processor. I just installed Avast 4.7 on this system today, and have successfully registered.

When I start a scan and click on the media to be used, I notice that the counter stays at 0 while the counter indicates Running (however it doesn’t appear to be running because I have Avast on my mother’s computer and once the scan starts, the files scanned keep adding on the counter), and I get error message 183 indicating. Within 30 seconds I get the following error message:

Unknown error. Scan completed with error 183= cannot create a file when one already exists.

I have no other antivirus software on this system as I uninstalled EZ anti virus before installing Avast. I do have Spyware doctor running on this system.

Does anybody know how I can correct this problem?

Thanks

I"m not sure what that error message meant, but it appeared that the installation wasn’t effective because the files were not showing scanning, so I uninstalled the program using Avast’s uninstall program and then reinstalled the program.

Now it is scanning and I assume it will work correctly. Shoud I have further errors, I will report back.

I’m still curious what error message 183 means for this software.

Thanks for the update, glad that everything is working now.

I’m curious too, I’m not sure if it is a windows file system error or an avast specific one.

Window error 183 = Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
