Error 302 - Can't update

When I tell Avast to update, or it tries to automatically, I get an error 302 when the thermometer bars appear and it can’t update. I’ve tried it a number of times, both automatic and manual. When I first installed it a couple of weeks ago, I did get it to update once, by turning off my firewall. But that doesn’t seem to help anymore. A couple of days ago, it did update automatically and popped up the announcement when it was done, but most of the time, it won’t work. It won’t update the software or the virus library in most cases.

I’m running Win2000, fully updated (SP4), Comodo firewall, which I have turned off to see if that helps (it doesn’t, except for the first time), and no other anti-virus software. I just re-installed Windoze a couple of weeks ago and went to Avast for my AV software.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is preventing Avast from updating most of the time?

Windows error 302 is “The volume is too fragmented to complete this operation.”

Assuming that this is a windows error then I would suggest you try a defrag but if you have a large amount of disk space left fragmentation shouldn’t be a show stopper.

Can you try again and do a screen capture of the error and post it here.

Can you check the avast Log Viewer and see if there is any more information in the warning or errors sections.
