Error 42003

I’m repairing my girlfriends computer at the moment… Decided, that since she contracted a virus that wont allow windows to update, or symantec to update… I’d use my old reliable… avast. Problem is, I installed it, updated it… and ran it at reboot… but it came up with hundreds of files that said
Error 42003
…It hasn’t picked up one virus yet, Should I re-install Avast? Should I shoot her computer and bury it? Please help

It will be better get rid of Norton with a full uninstall (Control Panel then the Symantec utility for uninstalling).
Then I’ll think on install (or repair) avast.
If you search the board for 42003 I think you could find something…

Installing a av on a system that is already infected is useless.
During the installation the infection(s) can easily infect the av also making it not reliable.

Possible solutions:

  1. hookup the infected drive to a clean system with proper protection and scan it.

  2. hookup the infected drive to a (protected!) network and perform a scan on the system through the network

  3. format and do a clean install of the OS

Yeah, I knew there was the possibility of corruption… but Avast has worked for me every other time on an infected system… and thats quite a few. I’ll just save myself the time/trouble and format… Or take a large gun to it. Thanks guys.

Now I’m completely freaked out. Just downloaded avast for the first time, and on scanning, many infected files were Avast 4 data. I moved them to the chest. I’m I screwed? Did I take a leap into the wrong anti virus program? Help me anyone out there, advise please ???

First calm down.

Please Help us to Help you In order to help fully we need more information…

  • What OS are you using? is it up to date?
  • What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number, e.g. 0436-4 (see about avast!)
  • What was/were the virus name/s, what was the filename, where was it found
    example (C:\windows\system32\infected-filename.xxx)?
  • What actions have you taken to try and resolve the problem?

The data folder has a number of sub folders (moved being one) and there may be a number of good reasons you would find stuff here, please be precise.

Was this after the install and scan after reboot?

Also tell us if you have/had another anti virus application on that system. If so, which one?
What other security related software do you have installed?

What do you mean? The avast! files where infected? Do you remember the name of the virus?
Do you have any log file into C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\Logs folder?
