I have had Avast Home as my Antivirus for some time now without any problem other than an occasional update would not load which I then did manually. For security on my PC also I have Comodo Firewall,Spybot S&D,AdAware, AVG Antispyware, Spyware Blaster installed, all up to date and used regularly.
This evening however, while my daughter who also has an account on this PC but not an administrative one was on Google the PC crashed. On restart I got the message that Avast had failed to update. I then tried to update manually but without success. I then found that my Internet connection was gone I restarted again but found that some of my startup programs had not loaded. I restarted again but although all programs had loaded this time Avast was switched off and I could not start it. I then got the following message.
“VPS file was destroyed. The scan completed with Error: 42040=VPS File was destroyed”.
I did not want to access the internet for advice without an anti virus so decided to uninstall Avast, restart PC and do a fresh install. This seemed to have worked until after updating and getting the message that Avast needed to restart my PC. On restart my PC booted up to the safe mode screen without being prompted by me. I then restarted again and although everything started ok this time I then got a news update from Avast and on exiting this I then got another message saying that Avast had to restart my system again. I declined that offer and as Avast seems to be working ok (7 provider(s) total, 6 running) I came here for some help or advice on whether all these restarts are normal behaviour.
I did a search on VPS File was destroyed, Error 42040 but found nothing.
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
Or use another computer and do an avast! VPS Update - Manual Download, save it to a CD or USB drive and copy to problem system and execute the file. This will update the complete VPS.
As I did not want to go online without an Antivirus I just reinstalled Avast. Apart from a problem with the updates feature it seems to be working again now.
No, because you don’t give any information about why you can’t update, complete error mesages, etc.
Is your registration still valid, check about avast, Registration Key:, Updates expiration ?
You may need to reregister, complete the avast! 4 Home Registration form and you will receive an email from register @ avast.com (without the spaces) with your registration key.
My registration is still valid for at least 7mths yet. As for warnings, I get a little red warning box telling me that Avast has failed to update. I also noticed that the update is set for every 240mins. Is this too short a period and wouldn’t it be better changing that to 1440mins or once daily?.
It seems to me as if Comodo is not letting Avast update even though I have instructed it to do so.
On my Comodo Application Rules screen I have 4 listings for Avast.Could you have a look at these settings and tell me if you think they are ok.
When do you get the red alert is it shortly after you boot ?
Do you have a broadband connection or dial-up, etc. ?
I would suggest you delete all of them and then do a manual update and allow avast.setup full access. The setup.ovr is the file used to compile the avast.setup and shouldn’t be connecting.
As far as the others go I wouldn’t set a range. As you can see from my firewall log avast.setup uses HTTP protocol for the updates and you may find as in my case it USES UPD to go to my DNS server for the IP address. So it would be easier to allow all activity for avast.setup rather than try to set rule, of course you can if you want use my log for guidance what to allow.
Please, allow avast.setup full access to Internet.
Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner) (allow server rights; access to ports 80, 443; accept connections from localhost on ports 12080)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service) (allow email rights: outgoing on ports 110, 25 and 119; accept connections from localhost on ports 12110, 12025, 12119)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.
Don’t need rights to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
