Hi the all,
I’m trying to run avast free antivirus 6 (30d evaluation) on an old laptop , but during files extraction it stops, giving an error 8 ( 00000008).
I’look through forum , but there is no any related post.
Does anyone know what is the solution ?
OS: windows 2000 pro- sp4, plus UR 1 update package (hot fixes included).
Well, I was writing when Pavel (from Avast Team) answered. Good he did ;D. I’m leaving what I already wrote anyway (after all, I took the time to write it ).
*** start of useless post ***
Since Avast Team is intensively working in Avast 7 beta, It may take some time to until this is answered in some way.
Maybe some Win2k user will have the possibility to answer :-.
In the mean time, maybe you should try to attach some screenshot.
Alternatively, may I ask, which other security tools you have (or used to have) installed? Specially (but not only), which other antivirus you had before avast? Have you uninstalled it? Have you removed the respective potential remnants using the specific removal utility for that security tool?
You could also try to run http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility under Windows Safe Mode, for each and every version of avast you ever had installed or updated to. Than download again ANEW avast Free (or Pro Trial or AIS Trial) from the official web site only and try again the install. BTW, the downloads from avast should contain a valid digital signature (certificate) if it is downloaded correctly.
Hi ady4um. hi pavels,
thanks for your reply, and sorry for the delay.
Here is the story:
H/w: toshiba satelite 1620 cds
S/w: win2k-sp4
A brand new 12Gb HDD IDE installed and everything builded from the begining.
Avast 6 was the 1st programm installed and the 1st antivirus .
When i run it, asked for hotfix KB816542, and after UR 1 installation, it gives constant 00000008 error.
I reinstall it for couple times, restart pc, repair windows & registries for possible errors… but gives the same error.
Has anything to do with toshiba’s small memory (32 MB) ?
To make things clear, obviously Pavel knows what 00000008 error means, and next beta release will fix it. But next problem will be RAM’s capacity i guess, ( if my knowledge is enough ).
I suppose, pavel doesn’t knew the laptop’s small RAM (till now), which is critical for any Alfa phase release antivirus softwere, much more on Beta phase releases.
In this point Pavel’s opinion is needed. Is a 32MB RAM enouph for Beta release ?
In the other hand must have an antivirus now, and i don’t know when beta 'll be released!
It is going to be a real pain to upgrade that Satellite. The 32 MB you got is soldered, and the empty slot is for a PC 100 SDRAM SODIMM. I believe 160 MB is the top RAM for the MOBO.
Today i extend memory to 163MB, and everything work fine with Avast 6.0.1367.
Some comments:
Though this laptop is an ancient slow machine, programmes seems to run reasonable when Avast is scanning your system.
This must be Avast’s strong point.
Last years, i’m using the panda antivirus and is a big headache when scanning or updating. Everything stops functioning,
even with a double core 3,06Ghz and some Gb memo machine.
Septemper when my 3machines license ends, i’ll replace it with Avast !
I don’t have exact system requirements for the needed RAM of the new version.
But in 2-3 weeks (when the final version is released) we have more information.
