Error: Access is denied (5) Plus a sneaky one!

Hi. I recently got a new toshiba laptop (Windows 7), which came with norton. Obviously I switched to Avast, but made the rookie mistake of installing avast before uninstalling norton. This made a mess of the system and I ended up restoring to factory settings, however I think a trojan or something got in during the switch.

It is causing tabs to redirect and random webpages to open on firefox and explorer (it also managed to change my proxy settings on firefox). MBAM, windows defender, superantispyware and avast failed to find it and i think it is letting new viruses in. SAS recently found and removed a trojan, and avast has just picked up two new ones.

I have no idea how to get rid of this invisible adware, but before I post logs etc to get rid of it I am having problems moving the two new viruses avast has detected.

They are both Win32: Rookit-gen. tried to move to chest but cant.
One says C:\Windows\sysWOW64\drivers\kroover.exe763 [UPX] “Error: Access is denied (5)”
and the other says C:\Windows\Temp\iite.tmp\setup.exe [UPX] “Error: The system cannot find the file specified (2)”.

I know I am supposed to post logs etc, but I would like to sort these two before downloading programmes and scanning etc and I dont want to do the wrong action in avast (e.g. repair or leave it).

Cheers for any help, and sorry if i did something wrong but im a rookie!

Ok thanks a lot. Thought I should update as Windows defender just popped up, it detected and removed a trojan downloader.

Any further problems now ?

Not so far seems to be fine! Will post again if anything comes up. Thanks a lot for the help really appreciated.

Looking at that I am a happy bunny

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL

[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:Commands [resethosts] [purity] [emptytemp] [EMPTYFLASH] [Reboot]

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself. MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove along with ERUNT. But they may be useful tools to keep

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

[*]Click Start.
[*]Open My Computer.
[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.

SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point

[*]Go to Control Panel and select System and Maintenance
[*]Select System
[*]On the left select Advance System Settings and accept the warning if you get one
[*]Select System Protection Tab
[*]Select Create at the bottom
[*]Type in a name i.e. Clean
[*]Select Create

Now we can purge the infected ones

[*]Go back to the System and Maintenance page
[*]Select Performance Information and Tools
[*]On the left select Open Disk Cleanup
[*]Select Files from all users and accept the warning if you get one
[*]In the drop down box select your main drive i.e. C
[*]For a few moments the system will make some calculations
[*]Select the More Options tab
[*]In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
[*]Select Delete on the pop up
[]Select OK
[
]Select Delete

You are now done

Download and run Puran Disc Defragmenter

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:
[*]SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.

http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/7729/mbamicontw5.gif
Malwarebytes. Run weekly to keep your system clean

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit
[*]Microsoft Windows Update

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?
Keep safe

So close but I am lost at the ‘open disk cleanup’ bit, as i dont seem to have the option to select files from all users, and i dont seem to have a more options tab?

Right click disc cleanup and select run as administrator - they should now appear ;D

Done! That seems to have done the trick everything is working great. Will re-post in 24 hrs to make sure. Thanks a lot for the help, its brilliant that you take the time to help people like this. Cheers.

Keeps me off the streets and out of bars ;D

Everything is running great, no more redirects or pop-ups. The only thing is that avast has found 2 trojans which I cant move. Not sure if they are really viruses or false positive thingys?

Both are the same. Avast comes up with:

C:\Program Files (x86)\TOSHIBA\TOSHIBA Online Product Information\topi.exe. Status - Threat:Win 32: Trojan-gen.
Result: Error: Access is Denied (5).

Added logs in case they help. Cheers.
