error code sending receiving email

Hi, I just downloaded Avast! Very excited to try it, but I am having difficulty with my Outlook. Since the download, I can not send or receive… What do I need to adjust on the antivirus to allow this program access to the net? Any suggestions? I know it is probably pretty simple… but
