On 11/15, my free Mac antivirus (entitled “Avast Security” in the app, “Avast Mac Security” in the changelog) updated virus defintions successfully; on 11/27, the Update logged:

Hello,
this is really weird; applying .diff should validate content of the VPS file. Can you please send us support package (https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/Submit-Mac-Security-support-file) mentioning this thread? We will try to analyse what could be wrong.

Thanks – done. I did not get a “Your feedback was sent!” dialog, but did get a console message “Submitted report file to streamback”, so I assume success…

Funny – I am so used to going to the web for support that I didn’t even think to check the app’s menus. Ah well, next time…

I got suspicious that my support package submission failed, so I tried it again while looking at the network monitor, and saw no network activity. So I thought I’d try uninstalling and reinstalling Avast…and boy, am I suffering remorse: it won’t install! The exact same package from the exact same dmg I installed before. Something about “installation script failure”. Here’s the console log:

Hello,

You are on MacOS 10.6. This OS is not supported for several years. While we still release updates for the detection engine, due to the hardware’s age we are no longer able to automatically check that it works on these old systems.

It seems that something broke and the VPS can no longer be loaded on 10.6. We are investigating the issue; we will see if we will be able to make it work again or if we will have to abandon these old OSes. This issue is also preventing installation.

I will always greatly appreciate Avast for being the only team (that I know) continuing to supply virus definition updates and 12.9 installer to millions around the world who are too intelligent, too environmentally-concious, too frugal, or too poor to pollute the planet dumping perfectly good expensive carbon-intensive 2 GHz 64 bit dual core Intel hardware into the e-waste stream and stripping the planet further for equally-expensive carbon-intensive hardly-better replacements merely because Apple doesn’t feel like compiling any more versions of software for it.
