Avast ver. 4.8 Home edition is not updating automatically or manually. The message “Error: HTTP Server returned error 501” displays on the screen. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Avast and the problem continues. Avast has been running on this computer since new without any problems.
The computer is a Lenovo model 7387-26U running Windows XP home with all the updates.
I don’t know what “error 501” and your help is greatly appreciated to resolve this problem. Thanks.
Please check if the file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def is displayed correctly, it should contain [servers] on the first line.
You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the one in the avast setup folder, disabling the avast self-defense module first.
How do you connect to internet, is it ADSL? And do you have other computers with working avast updates using the same connection?
Try to open avast settings - Update (Connections), press Proxy button, and select Direct connection, press OK to confirm. Then try to start iAVS update manually again.
Avast is working fine on another computer using the same internet connection. I am using Bellsouth ASDL as the internet provider.
I tried your first suggestion and I didn’t see a problem there. I did not try your second suggestion to download the files.
I opened avast settings and in proxy selected Direct connection. I then rebooted and then tried to update manually and got the same error message. As I was sitting and working on another project after a couple of minutes I heard the message that avast has updated the database. I then tried to update manually and I did Not get the error message and everything seems okay. Thanks for your help.
I have already scanned the drive and ran a couple other spyware and malware detection programs because when I would open up a program after avast was updated and working properly avast would give an alert that a trojan was found. I was wondering if that is what may have caused the program with avast not working properly.
Which program?
Can you say what is the infected file name, where was it found (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx)?
What avast! version and virus database are you using? (see About dialog of avast!)
I’m sorry but I didn’t write down the infected file name. Is it recorded somewhere? I hope the other information is helpful.
Version 4.8 Home
Build Feb2009 (4.8.1335)
Xtreme Toolkit version 1.9.4.0
VPS File
Compilation date 06/07/09
File version 090607-0
I guess the VPS compilation date is updated and current and therefore not the version that was on the system when the problem occurred initially and after the problem was fixed the other day when I ran the virus scan.
In the future I will record the information when (if) there is a problem.
Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast ‘a’ icon), Warning section, this contains information on all avast detections. C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashLogV.exe - Or check the source file using notepad C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Warning.log
Here is the warning.log file. I hope it is helpful.

Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on. If avast does not detect it, you can try DrWeb CureIT! instead.
Use MBAM (or SUPERantispyware or even Spyware Terminator) to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete them.
Try to open avast settings - Update (Connections), press Proxy button, and select Direct connection, press OK to confirm. Then try to start iAVS update manually again.
