error messages in scan report

after running a scan on the entire system with avast the scan report gives a list of files (/var/, /proc/ and so on) saying ‘permission denied’. how do i enable permission?
I have a dual booted system with ubuntu 8.10 and XP Pro. Can I scan windows partitions from avast on ubuntu?

In Ubuntu just scan your /home folder- you’re only looking for Windows viruses you might have downloaded anyway.

Get into the Ubuntu mindset- security means permissions, not virus scans.

Yes you can scan your Windows partition from Ubuntu- make sure you do a full shutdown, not a hibernate.

thank you. But why do i get that error message?

You’re not scanning with root permission so avast! is not allowed to access system files.

how can i enable root permission? i would like to scan my windows folders from linux since some virus is blocking avast when i try to do it from there(windows).

You should be able to scan the Windows partition from Ubuntu without invoking root permission- i.e. a normal scan should do it.

You may still find password protected files that avast! cannot scan, but don’t worry about these.

Another useful tool is the Kaspersky online scanner. You can run it in Firefox in Ubuntu and it will scan your Windows partition. You will have to manually delete any virus files found.

If you really really want root permission to avast, use:

sudo avastgui
