Avast is giving me this message: Not enouigh user rights to continue.
What does this mean.
Help please
Johnboy
Are you installing avast?
Are you using Windows XP?
At a common user or administrator?
Hi,
Thanks for response
I am installing Avast on XP Home edition
I think I am logged as Administrator, how do I check that, please?
Thankks
I have just checked and I am logged as computer administrator!
So what does 'Not enough rights mean?
Thanks
Hi there,
Can you make a screenshot of exact window containing that error message, please ?
Also, make a screenshot of USER ACCOUNTS window like I just did (see attachment)
Here is a little explanation what you can do in both cases… one is when you are logged with administrator rights, and other one is account with limited rights…
Are you 100% sure you are logged as Administrator or at least as a user with administrator rights ?
On the user page it states ‘John’ computer administrator and I can install programmes and have done without previous problems.
Can you still post the screenshot of the error message you are getting ? It’s important to see what’s going on in there. It’s not easy to solve someone else’s problem especially if we have to do that “remotely” like this and we are not even close to your location…
That message window could reveal some important info you may overlooked…
Btw, do you use any software firewall and which one ? What are other security programs you have installed on your PC ?
Edit: Also, what version of avast! you are trying to install ?
Hi,
I am going to reinstall avast to duplicate the window.
The firewall I use is Zone alarm
Plus avast 4 home edition
Which build please…? 4.5.549 ?
What do you mean? Can you rephrase?
Technical, he will install avast! again to be able to capture the error message he’s getting during installation process… then he will post the screenshot. I wanna see is there maybe some particular program giving him that message…
Johnboy, try disabling firewall completely and then try to install avast! After installation and possible system restart, be sure that your Firewall is enabled as well…
It is getting a bit foggier still, now!
Re-installed and now getting error message : Problem updating, also cannot connect Outlook express and ‘Process guard’ has gone dead too, despite downloading Avast in - Process guard 'learning mode.
I have DE-INSTALLED again and everything else is back to normal.
It looks like Avast does not like my system or there is a major conflict somewhere
I’ll go with BitDefender until I can figure it out.
Thanks for all your input.
Cheers Johnboy
Why do you keep Process guard ? Most likely, it gives you all those problems. People like to install all kind of unnecessary software on their computers and they get all those conflicts. I’m not sure you’re not gonna get same problem when you try to install BitDefender… Try disabling it first and then install avast!
Hi Again,
I Did exactly that, disconnected Process guard and left it disconnected.
I’ll forget it for now, thanks anyway, cheers

Hi Guys,
Based on both your input and SZ’s commentsre Process Guard I duly jettisoned it and proceeded to “Shoot the individual” who recommended it to me.
Avast is now safe and well and working to perfection!!
I just wanted to state my appreciation to you both for the help and tolerance shown me.
Thanks a lot and keep up the good work, helping ‘juniors’ like me!
Cheers, Johnboy
You’re more than welcome. I knew something must be wrong with that program. Actually, maybe it just need to be reconfigured (actually, properly configured and adapted to your specific needs), but this way it gives you just troubles, nothing else. It looks like it’s made to protect your system, but c’mon… protecting your system by not letting you install one of the best antiviruses out there, that’s unforgivable.
Again, I’m glad you solved your problem, and you almost went to other antivirus ;D You see ? Sometimes, you just need to calm down a little bit, try to think what programs could be causing the problem, and solution is always somewhere out there. We are here to help, but you should stick around as well. Now, you have enough experience with that program (Processes Guard), and you could help someone else with possible exact the same problem in the future
Take care !

Take care

Johnboy, I’m glad to know you’re ok now. Welcome to avast forums.
Anyway, Process Guard used to be a good application. Last version was completely useless for me: I just uninstall. Old ones does not allow disabling (killing) the ashServ.exe (avast scanner). Newer ones are like a joke
I can terminate both Process Guard and avast services
Hi Technical,
Thanks a lot for the info’, with the amount of junk and nasties out there you do tend to take other peoples advice.
Not all of it useful, thankfully there is a forum with guys like you around.
Cheers for now.
