I also had W2k + SP3 + “all” updates. After installing some time “all available” updates for W2k I lost every kind of control over the PC. Even MS Office 2k Prof. didn’t start and reported damaged files or not installed (parts of) the programs. It toke a lot of hours to reinstall every thing. I gave the HDD a low level format to be sure every single bit was destroyed (Used the low level format tool from the manufacturer of the HDD). After reinstalling W2k I only allowed SP3 and no updates. Since I did it this way every thing works fine, including Avast!4. Of course I allow Alwil to update Avast!4 (happens some times more than once a day. Great). My personal experience and lesson: do not trust Microsoft too much even if it concerns their own programs. Is you PC working fine, let it be.
I’m afraid Microsoft updates as well in W2k Prof. as in Off 2k Prof. are confusing your computer from time to time so I decided not to install updates.
