My computer is running windows 98. It was infected with WORM/AUTOIT.MT, detected by AVG. now the malware has gone. But when I open some drive by double clicking it the message appears xmss.exe not found, and every time i have to right click and then open the drive. how can i remove this problem.

Are you actually using avast ?
Removing malware may have left behind the registry entry which would run it on boot, the fact the file is no longer there would display an error.
A google search for xmss.exe returns many hits, http://www.google.com/search?q=xmss.exe. There would also seem to be an associated infection with that according to many of those hits.
