The server connection could have terminated/disconnected early for some unknown reason but it would appear to have completed the VPS update. Check the about avast! (right click the avast icon in the system tray) and see if the VPS version matches the above.

Looks like you will need to do a Manual Update as the latest version (0540-8) hasn’t taken (right click the avast icon in the system tray), Updating, iAVS Update.
If that completes successfully check and see what the about avast says.
If the problem still exists, try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, avast! Anti-Virus, Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
Why did you reboot, a VPS update shouldn’t require a reboot?
Check in the "C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup folder for a file called reboot.txt if there delete it (I think that is the correct folder but you can do a search of the Avast4 and sub folders in explorer for the file).
Then do an avast repair as above.
@ MrBabis
There is no where that ‘djkms1’ has stated what program version he is using, so I don’t know where you have got that from.
Based on his stated VPS of 0536-5, it was about 4 weeks old at that time the program version would have been 4.6.691 released in July so it should be up to date otherwise the auto update would have done a program update, which includes VPS updates.
No Reboot.txt file
The reason that I rebooted was because that is when i get the error message, Im going to repair again and see if I still get the error…
yep, same error after reboot, this was happening before so this is the 2nd install of the program that I did… could it have something to do with being on a wireless laptop maybe, or something that I disabled in the services menu???

I doubt that being on a wireless laptop has much to do with it unless you use wireless to connect to another PC to connect to the internet (ICS)?
What happens after you click repair, I can’t understand why you are rebooting?
Are you getting any instruction to reboot after the repair?
I assume that it completes successfully?
Much of what appears in the log file is of little use to the user and is more useful to one of the developers. Clear the log so that only the relevant data is there after the error you are getting.
When you say you have installed twice, did you reboot after the uninstall (this is advisable to ensure it is removed) before installing again?
You could also try the Avast Uninstall Utility, find it here, run it after the add remove programs just to be sure and reboot and install.

I’m a little baffled now, does your internet connection load/connect immediately on start-up/after boot?
If so that may possibly be the cause if for some reason the avast program isn’t ready or busy so the connection failed error is the result.
In the avast4.ini file (“C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini”) you can delay this check for updates. This is just a text file so you can edit it using your favourite text editor, make a copy first and save it in a different folder.
In the [InetWD] section if the line ‘AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=60’ isn’t there add it or if so increase the value to say 60.
