Error when attempting to update

Hi.
When attempting to update virus defs or the Program, Avast returns the following:
“Error: HTTP server returned error”.
Program version: 32767.65534
Virus definitions version: ffffff-ff
FREE version of AVAST!
OS: XP

OK,

I should have known someone would ask :

- Which version of avast! Free…?? : 9.0.2008.177 (One would think the “Program version: 32767.65534” in the ABOUT screen would be the answer – not having to right-click the executable to see the version under “Properties”).

- OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?) : XP 32 Bit / SP3

- Other security related software installed…?? : I have Privatefirewall but it was turned OFF when I attempted the update.

- Which AV(s) did you use before avast!..?? AVG, but that was a long time ago, and it has been wiped from the system.
I should add, this is not a new install of Avast – I have been using it for years upon years, and then just one day, it would not d/l.

Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
Reboot.
