error when opening "Sounds" settings under Win XP Pro 64 bit

I get the attached error dialog (screen shot) when clicking Settings in the Sounds options.

The text of the message is:

Cannot find the MMDRIVER.INF file needed to install drivers. The file may be damaged or may not be in your Windows SYSTEM32 directory. Copy the original file on Windows Disk 1 to your SYSTEM32 directory.

I discovered this error because I am trying to turn off the “verbal” alerts when the virus database is updated. Can someone tell me how to do that?

Sorry, I can’t read the error message, even clicking over it.
Can you paste ‘only’ the active window (message box) and not all your desktop with the white background?

Sorry - I don’t have SnagIt (screenshot) installed on that machine, and I forgot to crop the image which I Alt-PrintScn pasted into Paint.

In any event, I recorded the exact text of the error message exactly in the original post:

Cannot find the MMDRIVER.INF file needed to install drivers. The file may be damaged or may not be in your Windows SYSTEM32 directory. Copy the original file on Windows Disk 1 to your SYSTEM32 directory.

Huh, I have never heard of such a problem (and I really doubt it’s avast-related) - but you can simply disable all avast sounds by ticking the “Disable avast! sounds” box on the Sounds settings page…

BTW does the same error message appear if you open the Sounds applet directly from Control Panel?

The error message does not occur if you open the Sounds and Audio Devices directly from Control Panel.

The problem only occurs in Avast. The system sounds dialog box still appears if you dismiss the error dialog.

Hint: the error dialog does NOT appear if you fire up Sounds from Avast on Windows XP Pro 32 bit.

The error occurs on Win XP Pro 64 bit.

OK, I can confirm that. We’ll try to fix it somehow.

Should be fixed in the new version.
