Does a manual update work?
What firewall are you using?
Basically, check the log files (or post the last 100 lines of the logs):
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
or C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.log
Maybe you’re not being able to update, maybe it is just a temporary problem at that particular server.
Are you using a firewall? Is avast.setup allowed to connect?
Can you manually update?
Yes, manually is ok.
I’m using W98
Windows firewall is working.
I had an auto-update problem this morning, also. I’m using a beta, 4.7.1089.
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=31426.msg264151#msg264151
With Windows firewall disabled the problem still exists.
Bert
How can I see if Avast is allowed to connect?

Hey, you know the rules ;D: don’t post twice the same. Follow http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=31426.msg264158#msg264158
Thanks.
Windows 98 does not have a firewall… ???
Your log shows connection troubles… firewall blocking? Difficult to say as you can manually update…
You say you are using win98, but the log you posted says XP SP2
20:28:36 nrm/sys Operating system: WindowsXP ver 5.1, build 2600, sp 2.0 [Service Pack 2]
I’m sorry. Ofcourse it is W XP
Bert
Having had another look at the log, if you don’t actually use a proxy to connect to the internet, try Direct connection (no proxy) rather than Auto detect (use Internet Explorer settings).
I’m not sure how to do that. I work with Dutch IE.
I see in my settings that no Proxy is chosen. I don’t see such as Direct or Auto detect.
All I can do is to make a new Internetconnection but somewhat afraid to do something very wrong.
Perhaps you can give more specific advise?
You should be looking in the avast Program Settings, Update (Connections) as the image shows and set that for Direct Connection. Whilst the language might be different (if using Dutch version of avast) the location of the arrowed items should still be the same.
OK. thats clear. I give it a try.
I hope it will work. Thanks for now.
Bert
Polonus,
I’m not allowed to sent personal messages to this forum.
I have understand your directions and have a try.
Till now I used Norton 360, but LiveUpdate failed. I think for the same reason that Avast update failed.
Support could not help me, so I switched to Avast.
Till now, no problem.

According to the Log file. everything is OK now. Thanks Polonus for your help
Bert
You need 20 posts for that.
I did.
Avast had the same problem with connecting to the server as N360. Avast is OK now, thanks to this forum. Setting of the connection from Proxy to Direct did the trick. Norton support could not help me. So I tried Avast.
I do not know if N360-connection also can changed. But that is now theoretical.
Glad that the problem is now resolved, most who make the switch to avast from Norton don’t regret it.
