Error whist trying to update!!

Hello all,

i am running Avast 4.7 Home Edition. On computer start up i now get a red pop up with words to the effect ‘’ There has been an error whilst trying to update… please click here for more details’', when i click on the message it details that i can’t connect to any server?

Any advice would be most welcomed. Thanks!

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?

What type of internet connection do you have (dial-up/broadband, etc.) and dos it connect on startup ?

If you use permanent connection, maybe you need to change (or add) AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds value into the [InetWD] section of avast4.ini file.
You could set the number of seconds to wait before attempting to update. The default is 30 but it may not be enough in some DSL systems. In this case, you can try increasing this e.g. to 60 (1 minute). That should be enough.

My Firewall is Windows ‘Defender’(Beta version),and i have a broadband connection.

Avast was working perfectly until i had a power cut, and when i turned the computer back on the warning message appeared. Tis very strange! ::slight_smile:

Try a repair of avast you may have a corrupt file due to the power cut. Control panel - add/remove - select avast - select remove - scroll down to repair . You must be online

I’ve been getting this same error about half the time when updating the virus data base. This seems to have started after the update a week or so ago to version 4.7.827. After the red pop-up error, I click on details.

Then I see it states ‘could not find a certain file’ (forget the name of file and can’t find that statement in any log). I’m not getting a ‘server error’, but file not found. After the error, I try to manually update and it works just fine. ???

The log viewer for ‘warning’ shows:

“An error has occurred while attempting to update . Please check the logs”
Under that line it says, “Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return code is 0x00000002, …

I’m thinking that either avast is not waiting long enough in attempting to update, or… I was using something on the computer that interfered with the operation. I have noticed that on my system tray (after this latest update to 827) that avast is no longer the last thing to load. It’s now ZAP (Zone Alarm Pro). Maybe avast is trying to update before ZAP is ready to allow it? Avast used to wait a full minute before updating. Maybe that’s no longer the default? Not sure.

I have DSL Lite connection. Using Win98 SE; Zone Alarm Pro; IE-5.5 SP-2 (no… I’m never going to IE-6) OE-5.5 SP-2

edit to update:

I read ‘Tech’s’ post above. Then in avast4.ini file I added “AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=60” (there was no value there at all) into the [InetWD] section. I’ll have to wait to see if this fixes it.

Did you try what I’ve posted before?

Well that value I added to avast4.ini file didn’t help me with the update errors…

in my avast4.ini file I added “AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=60” (there was no value there at all) under the [InetWD] section.

avast still fails to update automatically - but when I do it manually it works just fine. Now it seems to be every morning when I first boot up that it fails (if there is an update available). I purposely watched and waited without running any software to see if possibly I was interfering with the operation in any way. After a few minutes, I see the red pop-up window stating “An error occured while trying to update… click for details”. The detail states, “System cannot find file specified” Total time 2:13. I then try updating manually and it works fine… total time 46 seconds. (now on file ver. 0619-1).

I only get this error when there IS an update available and it tries automatically. When it tries automatically and there is no update available, there’s no error. This started right after the program update to 4.7.827 I think.

Please advise. Thank you.

I’m using Win98 SE; IE-5.5 (SP-2); ZAP (ZoneAlarm Pro)

;DAll sorted now!! ;D

I did try the above suggestions, but didn’t seem to work.
I decided to reinstall Avast from the website. And dingdangdoo, it works perfectly! No more problems!

Many thanks for the advice though, guys.

Keep up the good work!!

Windows Defender is not a firewall, it’s an anti-spyware program. I hope you really are running a firewall and that what you posted was just a slip of the fingers.
