Error with missing file - avast 4 home

I was using my computer as usual, when form yesterday to today, the system says:

“This application has failed to start because MSVCP71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem.”

The system does not allow me to re-install, uninstall, fix, update, upgrade, nothing!

Do know what to do.

Last modification:
I installed Adobe reader 9.
After this I notice the problem.
I tried do restore the system but did not work.

My system is a Windows Vista home premium 64 bit
Core 2 Duo Processor T5550
4096MB DDR2

I prefer help in PORTUGUESE or english if portuguese not possible.

Thanks. ???

What application failed to start ?
Usually it would be one that you had just started if the actual program expecting it wasn’t reported.

See if this provides any information, http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1151823&SiteID=1 or do a google search for the file name as there are many more hits, the above was just one.

ashDisp.exe

I think is when the Windows starts and the avast will do it too.
But everything I try to do with avast do no works.

avast! uses MSVCP71.dll indeed, but it also installs it if it’s not already present on the system.
Maybe an uninstaller of some other application removed it?

What exactly do you mean by “the system does not allow me to re-install, uninstall, …”? What happens when you try to uninstall avast! from the Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs?

  1. Check the option in the Appearance tab of settings.
    or
  2. Repair your avast installation through Control Panel.
    or
  3. Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder
    or
  4. Add the path to ashDisp.exe into a value named avast! in the Windows Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    See picture here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=26155.msg213891#msg213891

If that does not help, please, uninstall, boot, install again, boot.

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc.?

Do you have any other antivirus in this machine? Did you have in the past?

about MSVCP71.dll:
I don’t know if another aplication have removed it and I don’t know how to check it.

So… this pictures shows what I mean with my words… I can’t even uninstall avast…

answering Tech:

functions uninstall and install doesn’t work properly. Take a look at my tries in the pictures above, maybe you had already seen it before and knows what I should do.

I had Norton Antivirus for 6 months, but i uninstalled it becouse the free period expired. Since then I have been using Avast.

Hope it make things clear.

Please try the stand-alone avast! uninstallation tool.

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

“Please try the stand-alone avast! uninstallation tool.”

I tried but i don’t know how to run vista in safe mode!

I couldn’t pass from point 1.

I’m thinking the problem can have something with a RealPlayer upgrade, because RealPlayer is showing the same error about missin file MSVCP71.dll:
I don’t know if another aplication have removed it and I don’t know how to check it.

I downloaded it from net and I put it inside C:\Windows\System32\msvcp71.dll
and I tried to run :
regsvr32 “c:\windows\System32\msvcp71.dll”

but it said it failed to load.

How I can fix this?

I put my mind to work for a while and :

I runned vista in safe mode;
Used the stand-alone avast! uninstallation tool
So I restarted and Avast was gone!
Then I installed the last portuguese avast home 4.8 version
Everything seems to work properly, it icludes Real Player.

I guess the avast instalation solved the problem with MSVCP71.dll…

Thank you guys for the help and patience…

And if someone have a problem that I see here in forum, I hope I can help as you helped me.

Cya!
