Ethernet problem

Hello!

I need some non-Avast-related help. I bought a new laptop - Lenovo G770. I installed Widnwos 7 and all the drivers but I can’t connect to the internet by cable. Only wireless works. When I connect the cable the connection icon shows an exclamation mark. Troubleshooting says that my local area connection doesn’t have a valid IP configuration. If I connect my other laptop (Sony Vaio) to that same cable the internet works without problems there.

I formatted the Lenovo disk, installed all the drivers, tried many things - nothing. Please help.

Does you have the right IP version installed? Open up a command prompt and type “ipconfig /all” post the results for your Local Area Connection here,

Hello Polonus!

I don’t know if I have the right IP version installed. Wireless connection works, but the cable connection doesn’t. Here are my results:

C:>ipconfig /all

Can anyone help me please?

I tried /flushdns, /release and /renew (ipconfig commands), but the problem is still here. Renew gives an error: unable to contact DHCP server. What can I do?

Hi,not sure but this may apply to win 7 also.

Try running Farbar Service Scanner- http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-service-scanner/
Please post the log file.

Also, use Troubleshooting in control panel to troubleshoot network errors. See attachment. Not sure if this is what you meant by troubleshooting in your first post.

Go to Device Manager in control panel then network adapters to make certain there is no Ethernet error.

Are you hardwired to the router or hardwired directly to your modem?

What firewall are you using?

The Sony connects, I would compare settings with the Lenovo to see what is different.

try this

click start

click control panel

click Network and Internet link

click change adapter settings

right click Local Area Connection

click properties

click internet protocol version 4

make sure obtain ip address automaticaly

  • obtain dns server adress automaticaly

click ok to the 2 windows

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

it seems you are missing a default gateway in your settings.

Thank you all, very much! I’ve messed around today with it and the connection established only when I entered the other laptop’s IP, gateway, mask and DNS. At least now I know that my laptop/ethernet card isn’t faulty. I will try the stuff you wrote me when I have time - and then post back. Again, thanx!

actually, something like this happened to me some time ago, but the other way around. on my desktop (W7 SP1), hardwired to my router, I lost the internet connection. after using without problems the desktop for more than a year, all of the sudden my ethernet connection had the yellow exclamation mark on it and refused to connect to the internet. no matter what i tried, i couldn’t fix this. the only solution was to buy a wireless card. even today i still don’t know what went wrong.
