For quite some time I have used the Avast Home Edition as my virus protection with TERRIFIC results.
But, here is my current situation. One of my larger clients Enterprise Version of Symantec neared expiration, and I want to deploy the ADNM to their workgroup network. I’ve hit a road block when performing the deployment to the clients.
I recognize that I might be providing too much information here, but the following represents my experience thus far.
ADNM(MSDE) installation package downloaded to WindowsXP system. - No problem.
Installation of ADNM - No Problem.
Find workgroup computers - No Problem.
Establish Deployment Task to Push to workgroup computers - No Problem.
(Details - I’ve created a USERACCOUNT on each of the WindowsXP client systems with administrative priveleges. In the Deployment task definition I use this account to perform the login and install, I run the test account and receive a proper acknowledgement).
Run Deployment - FAILED.
Each computer FAILED the installation - with the 0000x5 error.
Are their specific elements of the client system firewalls that I should open up?
I’ve re-read my documentation - and I can’t find the specific ports.
Frankly, I’m a bit stressed as I want the client to appreciate the value of AVAST as I do, but I’m struggling at this point.
Once deployed, I’m certain I will convert to a Licensed Installation.
Can ANYONE help this newbie installation? Provide me some direction?
First, are the XP machines part of a domain? If not, it’s quite likely that “Simple File Sharing” is enabled. This must NOT be the case for the deployment to work. That is, you need to make sure that Simple File Sharing is disabled.
Please see e.g. here for some additional discussion: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=19239.0 (or use the forum’s search feature, there’re more threads dealing with this specific issue).
As I’m sure you suspected, after I made my own post I began to read the pages on the site. I found most of my solutions here in the forum. I’m still struggling with a few issues.
First - this is a Windows WORKGROUP environment, with ONE Windows 2003 Server and 8 Windows XP Pro systems. We use the Win 2003 Server STRICTLY as an application server for a Medical Practice. We selected a Windows XP Pro machine with MSDE to deploy - It is not used for anything else at this time.
Once I followed your suggested steps (Turn off simple file sharing, and open ports) Almost all of the client systems worked great.
Here are my remaining issues.
Of the entire workgroup, I now have two Windows XP Home Edition systems that will not automatically accept the deployment. I can not find Simple File Sharing as an option on these systems.
I also have a Windows 2005 Tablet Edition system that will not accept the deployment. I’ve insured each of these systems have the port opened. I also have insured the user accounts exist.
Once I can get these three on board, I think we are ready to move forward with license purchase - one week trial should prove what I already know with my own experience.
[ SIDE NOTE ]
I want you to know - I think you should make the following a STICKY FORUM post, or included in the PDF FILE. It seems that more than 20% of your forum issues for ADNM revolve around this issue…

OK, great…

Unfortunately, there’s nothing you (and me) can do about that. Simple File Sharing is hard-wired into XP Home, and cannot be disabled. This is one of the limitations of this OS (well, I wouldn’t call it “limitation” but rather a clear attempt to prevent XP Home machines from being used as a part of managed networks).
So, to sum up, you’ll need to deploy avast to these to machines using an alternative technique. E.g. a msi package, or using the setup.exe directly (you can download it from http://www.avast.com/eng/download_avast_distr.html#3 (at the bottom of the page - be sure to read the note next to it)).

I’m not sure about this one (whether it has Simple File Sharing hard wired or not) - but it’s possible you’ll have to stick with the same method as in the case of XP Home described above.

Well, yeah, I agree, an update to the PDF document (based on customer’s feedback) is scheduled to take place soon… and of course, this will be one of the additions.
On client systems.
1. Turn off Simple File Sharing
2. In Windows Firewall Open Port 16111
VLK - Thanks for all the hand holding during this installation. I have an update and am curious if you can provide any additional information.
With regards to the two WinXP Home Edition systems.
What client should I deploy on these systems?
My plan is to perform a manual installation and I am curious, is it your experience that these manual installations with show up in the ADNM console as deployed?
Will they regularly update via the ADNM or will they act as stand alone clients, dependant upon the standard Avast update cycle?
PS. The tablet situation is very odd, I identified two systems with Tablet Edition installed that accepted the ADNM installation without error. I can not find any configuration differences. Not a HUGE issue, as I will manually install on this unit as well, but curious.
PS. I suspect after a week of succesful use, my client will want to proceed with a purchase. Will I have to reinstall or can I apply the license to the existing installation?
