Every time I connect to the wireless internet the firewall think's it's new

Every time I reconnect to a wireless network the Avast firewall think’s it new and asks me what type of network it is (e.g. home, office, public). I have “remember my selection” checked. Is there anything else I can try doing so it doesn’t think it’s a new network?

Quick aside: should I disable Windows 7 built in firewall?

There are more knowledgeable people that may provide more detailed advice but a couple points may help in the meantime:

  1. Avast recommends leaving Windows firewall ON.

  2. I would try a repair of avast or installation as the easy first steps.
    To do a repair: Click Computer - Uninstal or change a program - click avast then repair. Often this will resolve some issues.

After the repair, REBOOT. Please report back.

The avast firewall will ask when you go from one wifi to another whether you want home, office or public.
If I remember correctly you can set it for the highest security allowed.

If it doesn’t try one of these…each one is compatible with avast. :slight_smile:

Actually that fixed it. Thanks.

How is it possible that a firewall can be compatible with another (in addition to already being compatible with the built in Windows firewall). I’m starting to think Avast leaves a lot of responsibilities to other programs.

@hiddentalent,

Avast Free is compatible with several firewall tools. AIS has its own firewall as you already know, so no need (nor recommended) to install additional firewall tools. In addition, Avast firewall should work correctly with the built in Windows firewall if you want to leave it on too.

Neither avast nor Windows firewall provide “outbound” protection. Nor do they have HIPS.
I am not speaking against avast or Windows. You will find, if you read the many and various signatures, that many of us on the forums use third party firewalls. Just as almost all of us use other security software such as MBAM and Super Anti-Spyware among others. We do so to compliment our avast protection. :slight_smile:

@ ady4um The ones I gave links to do “not” conflict with the firewall in AIS.
I am not recommending anything just suggesting. :slight_smile:

@Para-Noid,

I understood your suggestion. Please re-read what hiddentalent wrote after your post. He/She is not interested in using another firewall, and he/she is interpreting your suggestion as Avast Software not taking responsibility (or delegating tasks into competitors).

Since the OP is interested in resolving a problem with avast’s firewall, and being this the avast’s forum, I would think that first of all the user should have the problem really resolved. If, after the resolution and in addition, he/she would be interested in additional tools, that’s another story.

In any case, there are not so many users using more than one (software) firewall at the same time (which, although possible in some limited situations, I wouldn’t recommend anyway).

Fortunately, the main issue of this topic is resolved.
