Everything except Google sites in Chrome broken in Avast Free 18.6.2349

Avast Free Antivirus 18.6.2349
Windows 7 Professional

Everything was working fine yesterday and for years.

Then today, I can no longer get dropbox to connect. I cannot visit websites either unless I’m using Chrome and the site is a Google site (e.g., Google searches, Google+). I get a “This site can’t be reached” message in Chrome or “The connection has timed out” in Firefox for all other sites.

When I turn off Web Shield in Avast, everything works fine.

I have tried restarting. I have tried Avast’s repair function and then restarting. Neither have worked.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

Hello noobavastuser,

Sorry for the issues.
To help us understand the problem, could you please check and post here the file versions of the following files?

  • “C:\Windows\System32\drivers\aswStm.sys”
  • “C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\aswStreamFilter.dll”

Thank you,
Filip

Hi Filip.

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\aswStm.sys
Version: 18.6.3979.0

C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\aswStreamFilter.dll
There is no file of that name (or any other files other than an folder named “setup”) at that location.
I located aswStreamFilter.dll at: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5
It’s version is: 17.7.3660.0

I have never installed any other anti virus software.

Thanks!

  1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

Thank you. But how do I know if all previous versions have been uninstalled? Does the uninstall tool do that automatically for me?

If installed in default location, yes.

I carried out the steps you outlined above and it fixed the problem. Thank you so much!

You’re welcome.
