I have a folder that contains a lot of files that never change and have therefore excluded it the from scanning in the General Settings Exclusion tab. However when I add new files I would like to be able to select those files and right click to scan them, the problem is that Avast obviously sees that they are in an exluded folder and does not scan them.
I have a workaround whereby I put the files in a temporary folder and scan them before moving into the ecluded folder but was wondering if there is any of getting it to work as I require. Surely the fact that I have selected the files and explicitly asked for them to be scanned should override then general settings
I don’t see it that way - if you exclude the folder in the general settings, then it is excluded and nothing in that folder will be scanned.
You could alternatively not exclude the folder there, but exclude it in the settings for the individual scan that you use - for example in the full system scan settings.
The other point to consider though is that if you are using the persistent cache, the files that you say never change will only be fully scanned the first time. You sort of then get the best of both worlds, if they haven’t changed they are not scanned again, but if for some unexpected reason a file has been changed it will be scanned, and any new ones will also be scanned.
I have only just installed Avast and am still finding it has a lot more configuration settings than my previous AV product.
Setting the exclusion in the full scan does exactly what I require however I had a play with the cache settings but could not fathom what was going on.
I set up a special test folder with a few GB of files.
I then set up two test scans to scan this folder, test1 stored in cache but did not check, test2 checked cache but did not store.
I then ran test1 one which took a little while to run.
I then ran test2 and this completed very quickly.
However when running test1 again, I found it was now quick.
I obviously need a little help understanding how the whole scanning and caching works in avast as I thought test1 would fully scan and populate cache (and thus be slow) and test2 would reference the cache in order not to scan any unchanged files.
