Why aren’t my exclusions working! I have added some things to the list and Avast Resident protection keeps detecting and deleting my programs I want to run. I know the exclusions are exempt from Resident protection so how I stop this thing from detecting and erasing these files. What gives?
I already read around other similar posts but none had a similar solution.
I have Win XP SP3 and
Avast 4.8 Home Edition 4.8.1201
What gives is we need more information, what are you doing ?
If you have read other posts then you will know the resident (on-access) exclusions are in the on-access scanner controls for the Standard Shield, Customize, Advanced, Add.
So did you enter it there and if so exactly what did you enter ?
avast doesn’t detect and delete your programs, it detects and alerts, you chose what action to take, if that is delete then you deleted your programs.
So some examples of the detections might be helpful, e.g. (malware name, C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?
Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast ‘a’ icon), Warning section, this contains information on all avast detections.
What are these programs and why do you feel they should be excluded ?
You should also confirm if the detection is good or bad.
You could also check the offending/suspect file at: VirusTotal - Multi engine on-line virus scanner and report the findings here. You can’t do this with the file securely in the chest, you need to extract it to a temporary (not original) location first, see below.
Create a folder called Suspect in the C:\ drive, e.g. C:\Suspect. Now exclude that folder in the Standard Shield, Customize, Advanced, Add, type (or copy and paste) C:\Suspect* That will stop the standard shield scanning any file you put in that folder. You should now be able to export any file in the chest to this folder and upload it to VirusTotal without avast alerting.
For the Standard Shield provider (on-access scanning):
Left click the ‘a’ blue icon, click on the provider icon at left and then Customize.
Go to Advanced tab and click on Add button…
For the other providers (on-demand scanning such as the screen-saver or the Simple User Interface):
Right click the ‘a’ blue icon, click Program Settings.
Go to Exclusions tab and click on Add button…
You can use wildcards like * and ?.
But be careful, you should ‘exclude’ that many files that let your system in danger.
avast does not erase (neither delete) files automatically.
or 1. Your installation is corrupt.
or 2. You’re writing down anything wrong in the exclusion lists. Can you post it exactly here?
To exclude you must make sure the exlusion is correct. To exclude a file that resides in many places then use \filename as the exclusion. If there are many files in one folder then pathname*.* works.
