Executable file is not detected as a virus when scanned but is when opened

I downloaded a free to play online game installation from a site and it is in .exe format, i have this habit to always scan downloaded file before opening it so i scanned it as usual and avast said no virus detected so i open that .exe file but when i try to open it avast warning just pop out out outta nowhere saying that the file has repmalware or something and now the .exe file is gone, i tried searching it in the quarantine/virus chest but nothing is in there.

so i was wondering where did that file go?? did avast just deleted it?? am i safe or what?
also it’s strange if the file is detected as a virus because i downloaded it from the official site, although it’s not by company but rather a private server made by some group (and about 600~ people play it daily so i 'm pretty sure it’s legit)

is that false positive or what? thank you for your answer!

Upload and test suspicious file(s) at one of these places virustotal.com / metadefender.com / jotti.org If file is scanned before always click rescan for a fresh result

you may post link to scan result here

i doubt i can scan it on those website since the .exe file’s size is about 1GB, it’s an installer for an online game… also did avast deleted the installer? i thought usually they just move the suspected file to a virus chest

Try looking in the virus chest.

i did and it’s empty so i’m actually a bit paranoid about this kind of thing that might harm my computer, i need to find where did the suspected file go or did avast deleted it because the file is too big? (1gb)

i need to know what happen to that file

He did, see first post

FileRepMalware = File with bad reputation … avast may have deleted it, what did the avast message say?
you may search computer for file name

I can’t remember exactly what avast said but i think when i open that .exe file, Avast warning pop out with repmalware detected on that file and that’s it, i see no other options… also avast suggested me to run a boot-scan and restart my computer but i clicked restart later and went to this forum instead,

i just tried to search the file name in my computer and found nothing, i tried to redownload the same file from the same site and now the file is there on my download folder… i haven’t tried opening it though

so i just noticed in the avast setting > maintenance that the maximum size for my virus chest is set to 256mb… so i guess that explain why the suspected file is gone… avast deleted it because it exceeds the limit for the virus chest? now that’s my worry gone

2nd problem still hasn’t fixed though, should i add the game installer to avast exclusion list? is it safe thing to do?

No info is given that can help us answer if the file is clean or malware

you may upload it to avast lab for analysis > https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=14433.msg1289438#msg1289438
