I am using Avast 5 free … my explorer context menu scan no longer works. I have ‘special scans’ and ‘behavior’ checked. This used to work, but suddenly quit. I deleted Avast and re-installed, but it still will not work. The option to ‘scan … file’ is there, it just does not do anything. Any help appreciated. Thx.
If the scan program work stands open
The problem is stopping the installation
That is a problem with your Windows
Installing avast not is perform well
Is a long time or you have Windows installed
Or earlier on Windows you have another Anti Virus
And delete you old anti virus
And you install a new avast 5
Windows or you already have long used is the installation of Windows
Perhaps the problem is in Windows
Scan not is run
Windows problem .
I think this is
I have had windowsxp installed for quite a while. No other virus programs. Avast 5 worked fine and then the ‘explorer context menu’ quit working. I uninstalled Avast … re-installed, but still have the problem. Scanned for virus, malware, etc … nothing there. Some configuration problem, maybe, but I cannot find it. … I did notice that when I uninstalled Avast 5, it left quite a few ‘references’ in the registry.
I does work, certainly on my system. If it no longer works on your system even after a re-install, I would suspect conflict with another security application or possibly malware blocking.
What other security applications do you have installed ?
You say you scanned for malware, what did you use ?
Did you also try an avast repair ?
Try a clean reinstall:
-
Download the latest version of avast, 5.0.594 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.
-
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0).
-
- Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 4.8 if previously installed and then for 5.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
I don’t see my reply here, so I will send this again. … Sorry if it is duplicated. I did the clean install … and the repair. No luck. I am using SuperAntispyware, Malwarebytes, and SpywareBlaster. I have had them for years and Avast worked fine. … Some configuration perhaps, but where? The only thing I have installed recently is D-Fend Reloaded (dosbox), but it worked after that. This is what I see in explorer, but clicking on it, does nothing. thx
I at a loss as to what to suggest as there are few configurations in relation to this. Having selected it in special scans only actually means it will be displayed in the avastUI, Scan Computer section. This allows you to customise the scan and presumably you haven’t been in there (Scan from Windows Explorer, Settings) and made any changes that might have an impact ?
So not having that option checked shouldn’t stop the explorer scan from working, just that you wouldn’t have access to any settings.
There should be a report of any files scanned (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\report a .txt file probably with explorer in the wording, I have a custom named file), but I guess if you aren’t seeing any scan progress or results that log would be empty.
Found it! pup was turned off … when I turned it on, it is there again! Thanks so much for your help!
Sandy
You’re welcome.
Though I’m surprised that would stop everything working; I would have though it would just have excluded the PUP checking.
Glad that it is working again though.
I may have spoken too soon … it doesn’t seem to check my zip files. (not pass-worded). Is there a special place to tell it to do that?
thanks.
Zip files should be checked as by default the ‘all Packers’ option should be checked, have you been tweaking again ;D
I am guilty of that … but just re-installed this … it is checked, but is not checking zip files. It is checking .exe and others … nothing on the .zip (from explorer).
No such problem here, see image of a scanned .zip file results. So I’m at a loss as to what is happening with your system/settings.
